I have been doing tree work for 15 yrs. and I have seen this so many times! I hate seeing it just feel blessed no one got hurt. I love the big trees, they are so neat to look at but a word to the wise think of the targets on your property. I had an old friend who was a logger and he told me his philosophy was the big trees are not safe around houses, you need to be prepared for this type of occurance if you own the trees. After doing this type of work and seeing the damage that can happen I tend to agree; even small pieces can do lots of damage from 100ft. up! :headscrat

yeah it snapped in half. the theory is that the tree took a lightning strike the day before. then yesterday, the wind was blowing just enough to tip it over.

Excellent that no one was hurt! I'd be disappointed about the damage to the building - then start thinking of how easy the DIY fix is and how much the insurance co will pay for the damage and the tree. I'd make money off that deal, no problem.

Having lived in the land of tall pines (north Harris country), a lightning hit on a big pine is pretty much instant death to the tree. I've seen 80' trees turn brown almost instantly after a hit, seen them split like sawed in two and even seen the top half of one explode.

My damage estimate would include new roofing for that entire side of the garage, if not the whole garage, as new shingles won't match existing. It would also include money for removing the tree from the roof, putting temporary cover on the roof, chopping up and disposing of the tree. Oh, and replacement of the tree! That tree could be worth 2K.
I once had a neighbor who crashed through my front fence and knocked down a small tree and ran over some potted plants. Wasn't even her fault. Other guy took off. Her insurance paid me just short of 10K because I itemized everything carefully. Took a year to settle, but worth doing.

that ***** if you can fix the damage yourself you might be able to fix it for less and buy some new tools :)
