Call me crazy, but I still swear these things are much faster than one of those thread checker sets

This ^^^ is my go to for most vintage stuff. Metric and imperial pitch gauges, and a dual mode caliper.

For the simple stuff the kit is easier, No squinting, finding bright lights to help my aging eyes. But seriously, 1/3 of the time it’s an oddball size.

The option of just buying a set in a case is becoming more attractive as I think about it. Then sell the "necklace" to some other sucker.

Id go with this.

The “necklace” or “bolt board” style seems best suited as a communal thread checker, like in a shop or hardware store. Small chance of someone losing or stealing a piece that way. Otherwise loose units in a case is the best way to go.

Fortunately, it seems I'm the only one who uses the thread checkers around here. If something goes missing, I know who to blame.

My cased one is so small, it can disappear mid project, same guy gets blamed.
