i need to get a air hammer but not sure on what one to get. I need a better one to knock loose ball joints and tie rods along with those F**** rivets that hold in ball joints lol! the one i have now just isn't getting the job done. I was looking at the snap on 2050 and the 3050 but i wanted your opinion before i buy. any input would be great

If you have the $$$ get a CP-714 -- long stroke air hammer. There is nothing that comes close. It has been an industry standard for well over 30 years.

On the other hand, if the dollars are a bit short the Ingersoll Rand Model 121 is a great hammer, or you can check ebay for a vintage Rodac USA made Model 275 -- excellent hammer.

Both these hammers have a long stroke and will cut very well.

Don't know too much about the Snappy's -- sorry

Cp 714 for .401 shank, for those that want to get serious a CP717 .498 shank tool. The CP-717 is the killer load

Snap on PH 3050 would be my first choice. I have a Matco RL 910A that works fine; I bought it use off ebay.

Make sure you get a long barreled model, they have fewer BPM than the short ones. In other words they hit a lot harder.

I have a Matco MT1718 that really impresses me, I'm not sure who the OEM is but I do know that it is the hardest hitting air hammer I have used although it is pretty big and bulky.

Has anyone tried one of the new hammer shanks to then use an air hammer to get rotors off? Also, is there any real advantage to getting one with the new quick release chuck? It seems like that's what all of them are going to now. Thanks

For $16.50 plus shipping, its hard to go wrong with this. Only three left in stock. For no more than you will probably use it, I'll bet it will work fine.

I use mine for de-heading drums, and on rare occasion with the ball joint fork for removing ball joints. Once in a while for beating stuff apart, but my 7X rivet gun works better!

I have a very old (35+ years) Black and Decker air hammer. I used it for years. I hope you know that you are supposed to drill a hole in the rivets holding the ball joints before you try to cut them (at least that is what my Ford manuals say) and you use a STEEL hammer to hit the side of the spindle while pounding on the air hammer and pickle fork. Never had one fail to come apart in short order doing this. If you don't hit the side of the spindle with a hammer, you can beat all night with the air hammer and it won't come loose. Don't use a brass hammer, they don't have the shock effect.
