What are "deep" crow foot wrenches used for?

I'm guessing these are used mostly for plumbing?

When would you use a "regular" crowfoot wrench as opposed to a "deep" crow foot wrench?

The "regular" crow foot wrenches I'm talking about have two sides, the "deep" crowfoot wrenches are 12 pt.

On the subject of crow foot wrenches, what's with the huge 3/8 drive regular crowfoot wrenches that snap-on makes? These things go up to 3". A 3/8" drive 3" wrench? What are these used for? PVC pipe fittings?

What you're talking about is called a flare nut crow's foot. Often necessary on large hydraulic fittings on heavy equipment, and various other applications.

And torque adaptors...

if you have to ask why the need for a 3" 3/8" dr crowsfoot..

you've never needed one....


imagine the size of a 3" combo wrench, and

cram that in and around multiple hoses, tubelines, & wiring harnesses, in places you cant get your fingers into, covered in dirt, oil and diesel fuel, with sweat rolling into your eyes, or a very cold wind blowing up your *** crack, while standing on your head, while a safety nazi keeps complaining your hardhat keeps falling off.........
then find out ater getting the wrench on the fitting, you have no room to swing the wrench

I use the snap-on deep 12 pt for injection pump lines. PITA with a regular or 6 point crowsfoot . I believe all of snap-on's 12 point crowsfoot (flare nut) are deep providing more surface area = less chance of rounding?

That pretty much covers it, only time I drag out my large size flare-nut crows foot wrench is for replacing blown hydraulic lines in an engine bay on a piece of yellow iron

hey...i have that set...

the deep crows feet i thought were for soft fittings (brass) that need a delicate touch. Refrigeration comes to mind...

I know what you mean. They are sometimes called 'crow-ring' in the U.K.

Well, they need less space around the nut than the open ended style, and they grip the nut on more sides, so for most applications you are probably better off using these!

I've seen them used for things like aircraft applications, say removing the pitot and static pipes from the back of an air speed indicator, or removing pipe fittings from deep inside a turbine engine. Never seen sizes as big as 3 inch used, but once you start playing with pipe fittings, the sizes get pretty big easily!
