Can someone tell me exactly what you use snap ring pliers for? I am assuming it is mainly used in automotive maintenance?

Thanks.

....to remove snap rings. I use them daily working on tractors. Seems like every thing internal (i.e. transmissions, diffs, axles, ect ) are all held together by snap rings. Especially gears on a shaft.

have a look at your ratchet (if you have a decent one ..... ) the entire ratcheting mechanism is covered / held in place with a snap-ring / retaining ring....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retaining_ring

retaining rings are used for securing axles, covers, bushings, bearings,...etc.....very effective, quick and cheap to replace and they can withstand a lot if force of designed right.

For snap rings...there are plenty of things in heavy equipment and agricultural that use snap rings.

On aircraft I usually see them holding in wheel bearings. Output shafts on airstarters, snubber rings on alternators, pretty much any seal/whatever that is on a shaft. The pliers will save you a big hassle, worth the investment.

Snap rings and retaining rings. You will encounter many different types on all sorts of machinery, tools, etc. One set will probably not meet all your needs.

I'm looking at a new set that should give me more uses/choices for different applications that I might need in the future.
