So, I don't exactly remember how these got presented to me, but now I can't get away from ads promoting "Stack Stands"

What are these, and how are they used, out of curiosity?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D39MKRY/?tag=atomicindus08-20

There's an example, I've seen multiple colors/slight variants of these, but no real details on them.

Is this some kind of jack stand or vehicle support?

All of the product pages that offer them for sale tout that you can stack them and "conserve space in your garage, shop or trailer" and I've seen a few references to racing.

Some kind of race stand? Why would these be used over normal jack stands, out of curiosity?

Thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity! :D

They are just fixed height stands that can be stacked to save space

They are just dedicated stands race car guys use. More stable than traditional jack stands, but non adjustable and I don’t see them too useful or flexible enough for general automotive work.

A stock car would probably be specially constructed with jacking points to use something like that. The crew knows exactly where to put the stands for uneventful jacking and car prep or maintenance.

When I ran a formula car team we would have two sets of a low and a high as called car stands. The short one would fit with the quick lift and just raise the wheels off the ground. The tall car stands put the car at about table height and often with all the body work off. It is much easier to work on a car at table height than being bent over or kneeling down.

Many of the car stands are custom for that car. Most are fabricated by the team. Adjustable ones bring a whole set of other issues. Folding ones are quite common, but we are talking about 900 to 1500 lb cars. Now the bulk of the cars are flat bottom where in the days of tunnels and skirts you saw some interesting stands.

What has become popular in place of large stands is a gurney on four wheels car is raised and lowered on to gurney and moved as needed.
