Back in 1987 after a hitch in the Navy and AF, my wife bought me a
Millermtic 250,
Makita 4"grinder
Makita 14" chop saw for Christmas. Soon after a bunch of weekend side work I opened my own shop in 1989. But it all started with these three gifts. I already had PPE and hand tools as I worked in the trade for some greedy employer.
Fast forward....and hard work I can say I don't rely much on outside sourcing.
Remember safety item as mentioned (fire extinguisher etc). Hot work can result in total loss if you get lazy and complacent.

I'll vote for
4.5" grinder
horizontal/ vertical bandsaw
drill press

Nice to have
Belt or bench grinder
Vertical metal bandsaw, more for the machining side though.

What's with all this flap disc stuff? How is it different from a wire wheel?

They are the ****. I hardly ever use grinding wheels anymore. Much less noise, vibrations, Heat. They do not gouge the metal as bad and leave a nicer finish. They don't remove quite As much material, but to me, it all right.

You can get some nasty flap discs that will move a serious amount of metal. I honestly rarely use a hard disc unless it's to get in somewhere like grind out a weld or where I need the edge. For everything else I use flap discs in multiple grits.
