What are the forum rules

Moved this here:

I can't seem to find a clearly defined list of forum rules or what gets a user banned. I've seen a few prolific posters banned recently, and while they might have been contrarians, I can't see why they'd be banned.

There was a user, Adam.C, who was banned before I joined the Garage Journal forum. I’m not saying he didn’t deserve that – I wasn’t there to see why he got banned – but his archived posts are an education in why tools are designed as they are, sensible metrics of tool quality, how to choose them, etc.

I learned a lot trawling through his posts.

A bit of foreshadowing here, this user was banned shortly after
I read through some of his final posts. He was very pro-Snap-on. I guess I'm not long for this forum either.

I don't intend to argue against any decisions made; I'm just curious as to what the guidelines are around here.

Depends on the moderator.
But there has been many users not banned but just gave up.
There is a major movement here to do things as cheap as possible. It is the haves VS the have nots where most of the discussion winds up.
Often it not a sharing of information but a debate of why are you wasting money on that.
Don't be surprised when this thread disappears.

You may never see what caused the ban... it's always deleted.

Not always but generally it is.

Not all bans are permanent some are temp bans. Lately, there has been a string of members getting banned with everything going on right now.

Trolling, spamming, scamming, drama, politics and religion are ways to get banned. Some are temp, depending on the type of infraction and how much you might have been a problem child in the past.

Getting a temp ban, creating a new account is a way to get your new account closed and your temp ban extended. Come back and cause problems, your original account more than likely will be permanently banned.

Best thing to do is leave politics, drama and religion elsewhere. When you log in to GJ, come here to relax, learn, teach and enjoy the atmosphere. If you disagree with another member, let it go, take a break and don't let it escalate to something worse.

If you try to come back with a secondary account, be smart, lie low and don't draw attention to yourself.

Interesting. I just found this post after looking for forum rules, and I am surprised that there doesn't seem to be a set of rules for the overall forum, just those Free Parking rules.

I do think it's a good idea to have clearly defined rules explicitly stated and easy to find, but maybe that will have the unintended consequence of overzealous people reporting every minor infraction, I dunno. I think the moderators and the members here do a great job overall of keeping things civil and appropriate, while allowing a broad discussion of topics and opinions.
