What are these spring things?

I wanted a pair of pliers that were in a drawer at a garage sale. The only way they were selling things was if you bought the entire contents of the drawer. So, I forked out $4 for everything in the drawer.

These things were in a plastic bag. Any idea what they are?

They look a little like electric motor brushes except that the springs are much thicker and stronger, and the parts at each end are black oxide coated steel and have a hole bored through them. They are all the same size except one that is larger.

The cylindrical ends have a small set screw.

I am hoping they are missing components of the Antikythera mechanism and I will be able to sell them and retire early. What do you think?

Those are drill stops. put on a drill bit to keep the drill bit from going too far past what you are drilling through. Used by aircraft structure mechanics. Nominal sizes are #40, #30, #20, #10, 1/4, 5/16. There may be a few others but l can't think off them off hand.

Thanks George. Interesting idea. I never knew they made cushioned drill stops. Now that I think about it, it is kind of a neat idea.

They do not appear to be found by a sponge diver.
Way to rain on my parade! Now I'll have to keep working.
