Sorry I make so many threads about what my stuff is I should spend a day takin pics. But I bought these cuz I didn't have a clue what they were and they were bundled with the plvmb wrenches I bought.

from a distance they looked like a file with a guide or something but they ain't files

Per the patent text, it allows a replaceable tip (such as a scraping blade) to be attached to a shank, such as a file. The device itself looks like a type of spring loaded clip.

This way, according to the patent, the shank can be made from cheaper material than the tip.

Also used for scraping machine ways. Here is the one I have. I "came by" it second hand in about 1970. It has carbide blades. It is stamped "Anderson Brothers Rockford Ill."

As Lee pictured they are bearing scrapers. They are used to make a good flat bearing or reference surface. Bearing scrapers can also be used to fit poured bearings. Very common to have "scraper hands" fit and finish the ways of precision machines as lathes and mills. Still done to this day on very fine quality machines. You can also think of it as a one tooth file.

The scraper shown is for flat surfaces. Bearing scrapers are contoured to fit into the "hollow" surfaces of bearings. My Millers Falls version of a bearing scraper is shown below.
