Found these in the floor joists of an old house we just moved into and have no idea what they are.

I figured I knew everything and owned every possible tool but these escape me totally.

Any ideas ?

My guess? Probably roof rack adapters for something like a sailboard/windsurfer. The big holder looks to be the size of the mast, while the smaller might hold the boom.

Just a guess...

haha your cat has fleas
I WISH the cats had fleas - it's much worse. That's a cleaner for when the darned puppy has an "accident" on the light coloured carpet.

Had a Buddy over to look at them yesterday ( over a few beverages ) and we have to agree they belong on a roof rack - what they hold is still a mystery but I can picture a bike on them.

Thanks to all for the help.

I"m guessing they're for something a little more permanent than a bike / wind surfer / etc. The largest slot at the top is on a cam / twist mechanism. Not real quick or friendly to use. Yet it doesn't seem to be super-secure (no extra locking part or anything).

Not sure what they're for, but I doubt it's something that would need to be removed easily / quickly like for recreational transport.

The more I look at them, the more I think they were designed to go over the uprights on an open trailer? Can't think what else they would slide over (since I don't see any mounting holes).

You're absolutely right about the user-friendliness, but clamps of similar nature are widely used on bike carriers:

I would suspect that quick releases don't get past the liability lawyers charged with considering the possibility of a bike bouncing down the carriageway.

Yep, roof rack pieces for windsurfing equipment. Mast goes in the big holes, facing towards the outside of the car. Boom goes in the smaller holes. Board lays on top of it all.

I used to windsurf back in the early 90's and used a setup pretty much identical to these.
