What are they coating VCT with in Target??

My VCT will be in soon from HD and yesterday I saw the VCT in Target coated with something that was clear, shiny, and completely sealed the seams. I ran my fingernail over the seams and the coating is seamless across the whole floor. What do they use? It looks like a million bucks!

Sounds like floor wax. I used to work at a commercial food service place and they had VCT. They'd have a floor crew come in monthly and wax it. Looks just like you describe.

Sounds good to me! You're going to need a floor buffer to accomplish this remember....

URY914- Thanks for the addtl reply. Did you use the S-495 sealer with the S-480 polish over it? How many layers of wax and how long in-between coats, did you buff each one?

The thing to remember is that whichever finish you put on the floor, it needs time (and maybe lots of it depending on temperature) to completely cure before moving your stuff in. Bring your stuff in too soon and it will end up stuck to the floor. You'll likely damage sections of the finish moving those items.

To tell you the truth, I know what it is but I don't know the details on how it is applied. Ask a janitoral supplier.

So my question would be... if layers upon layers of wax makes a VCT floor look BETTER, what would be the purpose of stripping one? I have black and white VCT in my garage, and have about 5 or 6 good coats of Armstrong Excellon wax on it, and its got some scratches and scuffs on it from general foot traffic, and has generally become a bit dull with micro-scratches, etc... I was thinking i needed to strip it all off to make it nice, but from reading this, it sounds like i should just sweep it out, clean any dirt off it and hit it with a few more coats of wax? My floor isn't anywhere near built up enough you can't feel the seams, so i know i don't have nearly as much wax on it as described above... thoughts?

My guess would be polyurethane.

Wax would not fill in the seams. If was was that thick, it wouldn't be clear.

They use wax at Target. You strip the wax to get a clean surface. New wax over old will look "OK" but kind of muddy. Wax has some natural material in it and needs to be changed (stripped and recoated) every so often, depending on use and desired apperance. Yes, I worked my way through college as a janitor.
