I found the following box on ebay for a fraction of new but am still not sure it was a good deal.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0417754499&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I did not pull the trigger and nobody else did either. This is exactly what I would like to have but do not want to pay to much. What are the chances that the owner paid the full retail anyway? I sent them a message and offered $1500. Is that fair or do you think I offended them?

If only a month old and in like new condition, $2000 is a very good deal for that box. If you are uncomfortable with spending $2000 on a large Snap On box, I suggest you start looking at other brands. You should cozy up to $3000 if you do want a large Snap On. But you might get lucky.

Im not afraid to spend $2k on a toolbox. I paid $1500 for my current snapon box in 1988. I just do not want to turn around and see a better deal in a month or two. IO guess the concensus is that $2k is very reasonable so I may just go ahead and pull the trigger if it is still available. Thanks for everyones input.

No big deal & don't worry. The worst thing they can do is to say "no. If they say "yes" you've got a good deal. And maybe they may negotiate for a compromise price. No downside to what you did.

Unfortunately there are going to be plenty of deals for the next couple years with the current economy problems and GM, Ford, & Chrysler all cutting their work forces by a third or more.

When I was looking a decent used SO box could be found on CL for around 20% to 30% of retail of an identical new one. I ended up paying $2300 for a nice 8 year old KRL combo which would cost over $10000 to replace with a new one and I am satisfied with the deal. I think 2K is a good price on a box that new but times are tough and he may take less or you can always offer more.

Also because of what I learned on this forum I contacted Snap On with the serial numbers of the boxes I was dealing on. They verified no money was owed, and they were never listed as stolen. They also gave manufacturing dates of the boxes and were very pleasant and helpful.

The free shipping had me going until I saw "PICK-UP ONLY"

You'll see "free shipping" on a lot of those ads. Don't expect any seller to ship a huge toolbox to you...esp. at a good price.

I just do not want to turn around and see a better deal in a month or two.

Unless you never buy a box, there's always going to be that possiblity. Find a good deal, buy it, and don't worry about it.

1500 was a fair offer for that box, it would be a little crazy if it was a krl series, however the drawer layout of that box makes it almost as useful as a REAL big box. For a real good box in my opinion it should be at least 54"wide, 27"deep, 44"tall, and for the real kicker have a full bank of drawers at least 36" wide, plus a big top drawer of course. Look for spring loaded casters also, its a good giveaway, but some cheaper boxes have them.

I have been watching the MI craigslist lately.

To answer your question...

To pay THOUSANDS of dollars for a bunch of bent metal... used, bent metal is asinine. Even though you might be getting a "deal" by paying several THOUSAND dollars less than list price you are still paying THOUSANDS of dollars for a metal box to store tools in.

So my short answer is too damn much.

Buy a new PROTO and get a box every bit as good for waaaaaaayyyyy less money.

If you shopped around you could probly get into a great box for $1500 maybe even one of their top end Vidmar type boxes. You could go with a mid level one like this and get into it for a little over $1000.00:http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/7A039

A guy down the road has one very similar to that, you can not even compare them to a snap on box. I don't care what argument you put up, Yes they are a lot of money But are they built better? Yes they are. Is a good spot of that cash for the name? Yes it is.

I just bought a KRL 1023A and KRL 1203B Bottom and Top a ling with a KRSC31 Roller Cart. All in all, a little over 20k and worth every penny! It will out last me.

But before this becomes a snap on bashing thread or anything along those lines. My advice to the OP is to read over the threads about prices of stuff already and make up your mind on what YOU want not what every one else thinks you should or should not spend your money on. There is no point in buying something you don't like, Especially if you are going to spend big money.

ask any flat rate tech if his big money box was worth buying, most guys who paid retail will still tell you yes, everybody who got a good deal on a used box will most assuredly tell you yes. A good BIG toolbox makes you more money, at all skill levels (except the lowest few notches). of course it doesn't do you any good if your a complete slob and never organize your tools.

30% or retail pay no more for a used box, as stated for the same money you can get far superior product from Lista, Vidmar, and Equipto.

Meh, My son in law traded his mac box in for a snap in of almost the same size, I think it was a hair bigger, and he said he really shouldn't of because he didn't need it and it was just a good deal, but in hindsight spending several thousand on something he didn't really need wasnt that good of an idea..he's a DOT mechanic.

I should say that since buying the Snappy Classic 78, and organizing things, we've gotten a lot more productive. We have very few constant use tools, and those are in parts bins. But a hell of a lot of maintenance on material handling equipment, large cold saws, and various other jobs. These maintenance and repair jobs have gone a lot faster, and our production is a lot smoother now that we're organized. Didn't have to be a Snappy box, of course, but it's helped having a box that's large enough to contain the basics. Also, having everything organized has prevented us from having to order some of the same thigns we didn't know we "had". Like end mills, bits, etc. I have a Huot cabinet for that, and that's been great too.

I want to get another smaller chest or two for other work areas. I've started building some things myself.
