Just installed my new to me coxreels 20 amp cord reel and my coxreels 50' airhose reel is going up tonite. The last thing i'll be hanging up is a cord reel worklight. I have a cheap plastic Cord reel light which i just pinched the sheathing odd with my car jack last week. It's taped up for now but i'm sure won't last long as the jacket of the cord is what provides pulling strength on the cord.
I don't neccessarily need an american made lead light as i know they are very pricey and i can't find any good used deals on ebay.

So what are you guys using that i can buy new and works well and very bright at an affordable cost?

Ty

I switched to battery powered LED lights. The corded reel lights are rarely used anymore: Obsolete technology, like the buggy whip, carburetors, and corded phones, in my opinion.

Interesting. Finn, that makes a lot of sense.

Actually, anyone recommend a rechargable led work light?

I use crafstman 30' and 40' corded reels with the new Sulvania LED light bulbs in them. I have several stragically placed throughout my shop. They give tons of light, they don't get hot, and the batteries never go dead. I do have some cordless LED lights that I use for quick stuff, but I still reach for my droplights all the time and preferr them over cordless.

I also have three 40' extension chords on reels placed strategically around my shop.

+1. Haven't used a corded light in years. The one I've been using is an older version of this:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PJOAHQE/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It has been dropped a million times, as well as been covered with oil/coolant/grease. It looks like hell but keeps on working. The two things I like most about it are that is has a magnetic end so it stays where I put it, and that I can take it with me outside or on a road call.

I use a sabre light, rechargable led, never use a corded one anymore. If you look around you will find them. $60 or $70. I have two so when one goes dead I just get the other one out. One bad thing, when they go dead they go out completely.

Show some photo of your reel install. I'm looking to get a 20A cord reel.

I'll show off my whole job in its own thread once i'm done plumbing the compressor to everything. The power reel went up last night. Air reel i just put up 10 minutes ago.

Just need to do the plumbing now.

Looks great Chris!! I too will be watching this thread, as I have an old craftsman corded reel light( bought in the 80's) that when you drop it, the light bulb blows out. Very annoying. Finn is absolutely right on it being obsolete, just like cassette tapes and the vcr!!!

I switch back to the old fashioned drop lights a couple years ago when my flourescent tube droplight burnt out after being dropped at midnight and I wanted to keep going. I dug out my old droplight and put a compact flourescent it in and was sold on the idea because I forgot how bright those old droplights were. I was using the $4 safety compact florescents from lowes. Last year I switched over to the sulvania LED light bulb and really like it.

One of the hangars snapped off my old crafstman long tube flouricent reel light last week and I plan to buy an old fashioned drop light head to put on the chord this weekend. I always hated the long tine light anyway. It never fit in anywhere and was always in the way. The only thing it was ever good for was hanging from the hood to light up the whole engine some.

Last year I bought a $20 head strap light from lowes and love the darn thing for working on cars. It is an energizer 135 lumen one. I wear that almost constantly while working on cars or crawling in my crawlspace anymore.

I still have a couple of the old Craftsman drop lights, but noticed that I rarely use them,

I switched the incandescent bulbs to cfl after I broke a leaky gasoline line and had a stream of gas ******* on the hot incandescent bulb. That was almost a disaster.

The led lights I use now are even cooler to the touch than the cfl bulbs and the thin design with no cord lets the led light slip deep into the engine compartment, out of the way.

The small Harbor Freight freebie led lights with the magnet on the back are useful for providing supplemental light from another angle.

I haven't used a corded light in a long time. I do occasionally use an electrical cord reel for corded tools but that reel has female plug on the end.

I received a Maxxeon Workstar MXN 02000 technician light for Christmas and really like it. Plenty of evenly distributed light, many mounting positions, small in size and 6 + hour battery life. I dropped it from 3 feet onto concrete once and it still is working.

Amazon sells it for $60 but some places have it for about $50 and change.

Picked this last week. Very cool and still works. It'll go up today with an LED bulb.

I use corded lights because the cordless stuff always seems to be dead at the very moment I need it or dies while using it. Mainly my own fault for not checking though.

I've found that I am gravatating back to using corded/ air tools.

Anybody use Klutch 50ft cord reel w/ 12/3 wiring? They rate the cord to be only 15A though, probably due to the length. The reel design looks similar to other brand name like Coxreel but about $100 cheaper.

i read online, maybe on coxreels website, or reelcrafts website, that the 20 amp reels are only derated to 15 because of heat build up when the cord is only partially unrealed. I read a warning type label saying " unreal whole reel before using" warning label somewhere online also.

If you unreel most of the cord before using it for a full 20 amps, you should be fine. From my research, the actual mechanical workings are rated for 20 amps.

This! Am glad I'm not alone...I've found batteries don't last when used infrequently by a hobbyist, even high end cordless tool batteries.

I can imagine the situation being different if they are being used day in, day out by pros.

^Try Milwaukee M18 or M12 tools. That's the only cordless tool I recommend because I know their battery design is (or was) much more superior than other brands.

I bought a couple of inexpensive cordless LED lights so I always have one charged if the other dies. With LED lights the batteries last a long time. I have forgot them on only to come out in the morning and find them still on!

I have a corded one rolled up somewhere just in case but have not used it since I built the new shop 5 or 6 years ago.
