Hey guys renovating a condo here. Just wondering how to go about putting in a recessed light. They had an old fixture with what looks to be a junction box above it. Can i just **** the recessed light up to this? Im a carpenter so if im way off dont be too mean. Thanks

You can't **** the new light against an open box. And the unjacketed black and white wires are not protected etc. The ground wire is missing. A re-do is in order.

The box in the ceiling looks over filled. With a little care, you could remove it and replace it with a larger (4x4) junction box and flat cover. Remake all the connections and bring out a short piece of Romex from a knock out in the new box to run into the LED fixture's junction box. As long as you can access the 4x4 by removing the light, you should be ok.

You can't bury the j box, that's going to complicate things.

Go with whatever works for ya.
I have to think of things like a licensed contractor.
Think about the pissed off electrical inspector when something goes wrong, the last guy without a chair when the music stops is the guy who is usually screwed.
And I'm too damned old to be dealing with pissed off inspectors/fire martials/insurance Co's and state electrical boards for trying to save a couple hrs in an attic and some junction boxes and romex. Hahaha
