I’m in the impact crowd. I had a basketball goal in front of the garage for a while, and might have been guilty of bumping the door myself.

Once the door has ANY imperfection, all bets are off. I’ve watched my 16’ door bow and “pop” as it raises and lowers past the 90 degree bend. I would bet the first impact was the cause, and over time the other creases (and cracks will follow) will worsen over time.

Having just installed a new garage door I do have one question. How wide is the door? Can't believe nobody asked this.
Is it possible the installer omitted some of the internal bracing? I do agree it looks like a hit then a corresponding crease above and below but if there were bracing channel installed it might have been able to take the force of the hit without buckling like it did.

My understanding, at least from the door I installed (8'H x10'W) was that if it's over 10' there needs to be support channel inside the door. This, of course will depend on the manufacturer.
