Prepping my garage for paint this week, but can't come up with a color.
I want nice and clean looking, but not sterile like white.

I'm also getting cabinet doors that are glossy white (I think, maybe red).
How do you come up with the hot looking colors I see in so many pictures?

What kind of car will you park in it? Gray's, black, blues and whites go pretty good with a Ford themed garage...

Porsche 911tt, audi r8, new vette?
One of those next summer.

So most are just based off the brand loyalty colors? Hmm makes sense.

Many moons ago, I was service manager in my uncle's John Deere dealership. The shop was a dingy off white with various layers of diesel soot. I decided we needed to clean the place up and paint to try and brighten it up as well. I made the management decision to paint the walls yellow, with a 4' horizontal JD Green stripe through meeting to a Deere logo. The mechanics liked the idea in concept, but were concerned about all that yellow. After about one week with the new paint scheme, even the known curmudgeons commented on how much better they could see while working on equipment. The small engine mechanic was especially impressed, now much more ambient light seemed available, not requiring extra hand held lighting. This winter I've been contemplating painting the garage some form of yellow for that exact reason.

A semi-gloss paint, any lighter color, is better then a dark one at reflecting light back into the work space. Going with white and adding a stripe of color is probably the best choice. When we re-painted the laundry room we went with a medium yellow semi-gloss, Not JD yellow, a bit more muted but it did brighten it up over the flat bone white it was previously...

You have several options

Brand color to the car you drive or love
Color for the sports team you love
Color that relates to a hobby you have
But
You can also do a color that actually complements the house when the garage is open

Personally I though it would be cool to paint the walls like there is another garage stall there. One side you can paint a cobra and the other paint a GT40

I did the standard white top, gray bottom, black dividing stripe, and black cabinets for multiple reasons.
1) the paint was nearly free
2) simple timeless colors that look good without being flashy
3) my car is gray, truck is white, so it somewhat matches

However, half my friends that have seen it just call it the Raider garage....I don't do sports, go figure.

Some other ideas.

On a serious note, have some fun with it....it's just paint. Give your garage some personality if you want. For me, I like contrast. Right now, I have the "builders special" and EVERYTHING except the floor is tan. Blah.

Worst case scenario...you paint it and hate it and re-paint it neutral/white.
