What compressor is this????

Went to an estate auction and won this for $110. The tank says it is a CH and built in 1987. The tank is rated at 200psi. Now the compressor just doesn't look like it is original to the tank. The motor is freakin huge. It is a 5hp AJAX with a magnetic starter. I had to disconnect it from the shop it was in so I was pretty sure it worked. Anyways, brought it home, wired it up and it purred nicely. Built up pressure rather quickly to about 140psi and you can have a conversation while standing next to it. It restarts when the pressure drops to 90.
There weren't any markings on the pump other than 6MR stamped on the bottom right and an A stamped near the oil sight glass. IMC is forged on the front as well.
Just have a look and let me know if you have seen this before..

Make sure you check that tank out before putting her to good use. If it's never been drained, you could have a time bomb on your hands. Just an FYI....

Thanks for the quick replies. Any idea how to find out more about the pump? What its rated cfm is?
The tank is questionable... We dumped out about a gallon of rusty water before we loaded it. The outside is not tank rust but more like metal dust attached to it that rusted. It wipes off pretty good. There are no pits in the tank exterior nor anything that looks like terrible rust bubbles and such.
I guess I will keep my eye on CL for a tank.

What you need to know is not theoretical capcities, but for you to run some "air-hungry tools on it and see if it will keep up with a sander, or a die grinder.
I would of bought this compressor in a heart beat! Commercial it is.

Now I just need a bigger tank. I may go out there and hook up my die grinder to it and see if it will drop below 85psi.
I know that motor is a honker... I think it is heavier than the tank...lol... It is nice and quiet and I am happy. I don't have a blast cabinet, but I do run die grinders alot and my CM couldn't keep up at all..

I don't think so. If a 5 hp motor will run it the output will be less than 20 cfm at 90 psig. Tank corrosion will be from the inside. You can see if it holds air.

Not hardly, depending on the pump, 15 to maybe 20 CFM. That is about the max on a 5 HP motor.

That pumps looks small. I wouldn't be surprised if it puts out 12-13cfm max.

Is there any way to tell? The compressor has no markings as to a model number other than the "6MR" and an "A" on it. I am going to run some tools on it and see if it will keep up.. I guess it really doesn't matter what the numbers are as long as it works well. A larger tank would make it run longer but less frequent. Craigslist here I come...hope you have a 60-80gal tank on there...

When new, this pump was rate for either 15CFM or 18CFM @ 100psi. CFM is reduced @ higher pressures.

new to the forum, so hello one & all - air compressor tanks that have that much moisture are giving you worse odds than Vegas tha they are sound. you haven't lived until you have a tank rupture. The large pulley was originally set to run a flat belt - some internet research will turn up beneficial tidbits.

I am in the process of searching for a new tank. Anyone ever purchased a brand new tank before? How much could a new one run? If I purchase one from craigslist, I still don't know what kind of shape it is in on the inside.
As far as I can tell, the large pulley has not been machined. May have been though. It runs fine and that large pulley really flows alot of air across the fins on the compressor.
