my 26x67 garage is getting ready to be poured next week and wonder what i could expect to pay if i had rebar put in it? Another question is, should i place a vapor barrier down. My soil is all sand.

Yes, rebar who cares about the cost. Put a vapor barrier down, if you are nickel and dining at this stage you are in for a long haul. Never skimp or cheep out on a foundation.

Rebar should cost you in the neighborhood of $1.50 - $2.00 per square foot. I can't see anyone pouring a slab of that size without steel in it. Vapor barrier is cheap, and should also be installed.

I doubt it will be even remotely close to that much, especially if the contractor is accustomed to using it on a regular basis. Concrete itself doesn't even cost that much, unless you're pouring over 7" thick. IMPO, it should be a fraction of a dollar per sq. foot for a minimal rebar grid, and even a fraction of that for a 6 mil poly vapor barrier........

Not enough rebar isn't was causes cracks. Uniformity in thickness is the key to not getting cracks. It also has a lot to do with the yahoo mixing up the batch with proper MPA. Not letting it cure too fast also helps.

When i screed my garage's out for concrete, I get them within 1/4 of uniformity. It's not hard to do, it just takes time. I do it all by hand with a 2x6 which is 5 1/2 inches. 2x4 if no hoist is going in.

Gunner, you should send me a pm, regarding Vapor Lock. High Grade Materials has some in stock and for about .37cents / sqft all your water moisture related headaches will go away. Some contractors believe a vapor barrier is not necessary with VL. ie;If you prevent moisture drive up into your slab why do you need it? VL will waterproof and vapor proof your slab. It will also raise the psi strength considerably for free. Lets talk.
