It's out by the fence over grown with weeds. At least that is where I found the tractor hitch that I looked for for many years at dads place. Ya didn't morph it into something else did ya?

You put it on top of the boxes and jars when you got sidetracked and picked up the other thing to take it into the house.

I can relate. I bought a grease gun and a tube of grease about 6 months and I can't find them anywhere. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm 68 years old. (Did I just say that?)

sberry, I don't have any words of wisdom to add, but looking for an item that you absolutely know you have in the garage is something that I do on a regular basis. In my case I have found that you have to let everyone know you are looking for a certain item and cannot find it.Once you have made the announcement the item will come out of hiding relatively quickly. I used to be embarrassed to admit I couldn't find something, but anymore I am inclined to seek help. You have told all of GJ that you are looking for the pin, so I bet it will show up soon for you. Good luck.

I lost my DeWalt battery impact and looked all over for it. A month later I woke up one morning and Bam! I thought where it might be. I had used it to run some screws in the shop attic while standing on a ladder, and had set it onto the top of the bathroom wall, and there it sat.

Didn't we read a while back that rather than tripping over all kinds of ****, you'd just toss stuff and if you come to need it, build another?:lol_hitti:lol_hitti
I hope you find it.

In my case, the easiest way to find something is to buy another one just like it. Within 2 weeks without failure the original one will turn up when you are not even looking for it.

Try it, you will end up with 2 of damn near everything - just like me.

Humans are very good at pattern recognition. That's how we've avoided snakes and tigers and such. The consequence of that skill is that we can be very bad at spotting things that don't match the pattern (image) in our head. I spent a lot of an afternoon looking for my yellow DVM and I looked right at it more than once except it was actually gray so I didn't see it even though it was in plain sight. In your case, assuming it's actually there, try imagining it another way. Imagine you are looking for wheels or some blue painted material, but not exactly what you are looking for. It's probably right in front of you nose, just turned upside down or something so it doesn't match your mental image of what you're looking for.

I had thought of the "plain sight" scenerio. I sent 2 other guys to look. I have some stuff on the bench already to make one up but it was really good and bugs me.
I mean I used it,,, in 93 or so.

It is small enough to hide easily.

I picked up one leg of a Plomb gear puller at an estate sale last year. I saved an Ebay search and one to match showed up a month ago. I won the auction and when the piece came I went to store it with the tool. The first arm was not with the tool, so now I have to figure out where in the 60x80 shop I left it! :headscrat

I know I have the first one somewhere because I needed the part number to do my Ebay search.

It is a lot smaller than your missing piece!

A place for everything and everything in it's place.

Just imagine you have it in your hand and now ask yourself "where should I store this" Chances are you'd put it in the same place where it is now.

I am pretty sure I raised this question on some other post; "Is it worse to not be able to find it because you put it away or because you didn't put it away?"

Buy/make another one. When you think "ahh, now I'll know where it is at all times!", and you go to set it down, you'll probably set it down right on top of the old one.

Middle of nowhere.
I lost my transmission funnel, or took it to the other shop 10 miles away. No biggie, run over to O'Reillys and get a new one. 10 minutes and $2.98 later I'm back at the shop. Top off the transmission, pull the funnel and go to drop it into the funnel drain. It won't go!

Yep, there is the missing funnel. I never pulled it from the drain to put it away.........

You saw it 10 years ago and someone threw it away or cut it up for another project 9 years ago.

He last saw it in '93, that was 25 years ago! If that don't make you feel old. I remember the 90s, like it was yesterday. Just replaced the battery in my Civic, thought I bought it two years ago. Turns out it was 6 1/2 years old. Time is flying by.

I built a new one today. Fugged up the design just enough to cost me another hour of welding. It was a little fussy, one of the reasons I wanted the old one. Had it all worked out. I might get a pic tomorrow.

I suddenly feel inspired to do some tidying up in my garage.
I'm not saying it is a mess in there, but there is an a 4 cylinder engine sitting on top of a tool box, and I can't see it.

Thanks for the inspiration.

If you can't find a giant blue contraption like in the pics then perhaps you need some glasses.
The big blue contraption was a result of not finding the piece I was after the last time I needed it. The thing I want is a big C clamp I make out of a railroad iron about 3 ft long
I just make a new one, put a 12 ton bottle jack in it. Just finished most of he real press work, got one side back together and the other apart.
