Seriously did you just buy something for $1500 and have no idea what it does? :wtf:

They are for repairing and building up worn out bores for re machining to original dimensions. A past project of mine to to convert a lathe to do the same thing using a standard mig power source, along with a tig dabber machine. Long story.

So say you get a part in for repair with a worn out bore (common ex. is hydraulic cylinder eye) instead of replacing the part, you can over weld it with one of those to build up the missing material then machine it back down to proper original dimensions. Thus fixed. Hope you can find a use for it.

Well if you have a lot of bores to weld you didn't screw up at all. If you have no use for a bore welder you screwed up 1499 times. I have no idea what they go for new or used but it doesn't seem to bad of a price if you need it.

If you feel you just screwed yourself.........contact the seller.....I bet he has a "second chance" bidder on his listing.

Well, you are part way there. The other part is the machining part. Once the bore is welded, it needs to be line bored. I have seen setups that did the welding and boring in one setup, which would save a lot of time. Perhaps Bortec has that stuff.

Having welded up bores in heavy equipment by hand, I can see where this machine would be very nice. One of the best things is that it should be able to weld a bore without leaving voids in the weld. Voids are very hard on the boring tool, much less weakening the bore.

Who knows, perhaps you can hook it up to a computer with CAD programming and use it as sort of a 3D printer! :lol_hitti

Can you do the same with a MIG / TIG ?

Not nearly as easily or uniformly. That uses the mig process, just with a mechanical guide to make sure coverage is uniform. It would be like cutting threads with a file vs a lathe. Can you do it with a file, sure, is it easier on a lathe with gearbox, no doubt.

Well, at least the shipping is free!

I'm with ya. I just bought, yeah, on evilBay, a vise I didn't really want just because... it's one of those angle drill press vises, only unlike the usual 2 1/2 inchers like the one Dad had forever, it's a 4". I thought, gee, that's kinda cool and the next thing I knew, I'd bought it.:willy_nil

You'll get a lot of use out of it, if people are lazy and don't bother to grease their machines.

I don't think you screwed up buying it.

Some schmuck just paid $1500 for one on eBay.

You could always resell it for at least $500 or $600 :)

LOL guys!!

I know about what it does. I have a friend who is a heavy equipment mechanic and already owns a Climax boring bar. I am no stranger to pivot boring.

This thing is pretty neat the more research I did on it. It will skip weld over keyays.

I do have someone I know who might buy it off me.

Why, oh, why did I buy

This vise???

But seriously, folks any ideas on how to repair the "arc of shame"? There's always JBWeld for appearance's sake, but for some modicum of utility, about the only avenue available to me is brazing. I could probably fill the divots with brazing rod and hand-file them down and have it look pretty good. I've also got a stick welder, but no mill or surface grinder to even it out.
I guess the real question is whether it's even practical to try - would the heat just warp the whole thing into uselessness?

It is an inclinable drill press vise. it can also be used as sine plate. I have the identical vise, that was given to me by an old employer. Ken.
