This last Sunday it was -32 with a stiff 10 mph wind blowing.
cold1_zpsiny6geeu.jpg

I went into my garage, where is was 55 degrees and dead calm and worked on a couple of projects building shelves, then I helped my son change oil in his pickup. By 5:30 the garage was starting to fill up with buddies of mine who were ready to get out of the house so they came over. By 7 pm the wife was bringing out some food and we were on the at least the third round of adult beverages.

Ended up am impromptu New Years eve pre- party.

Serviced my 2500HD... Changed oil, filter, lube, and Allison spin-on filter...

Wasn't bad, could do everything with the garage door closed except grease the front end I had to open it up for that and freeze my nuts off... Also didn't want to screw around with jack to lift up the front a couple inches so I wedged myself under there and got it done...

Started a week or so ago changing all my old T12 tubes to T8 style LEDs.
So far I've replaced 20, 48" tubes & retrofitted half of my 96" T12s with 4, 48" tubes...
All direct wire, got rid of the old ballasts & the humming &flickering....
Went with 18w, 6000k & 2200lms
Very bright, no noise, no flickering.....
Waiting for the rest to arrive tomorrow hopefully....
Still have 4 fixtures to retrofit.....
Somewhat pricy, but to me well worth it.....

I have a bunch of old ballasts & T12 tubes that still work ok....
Free for the taking.....LOL.....

I bought and installed segmented "V" belt on my KELLER power hack saw. I like this "V" belt and I have it on all of my machinery. The belt is $17.71 per foot.
I also bought a power switch and I hope to get it installed tomorrow.
Most of my day was driving my wife around town and to Costco.

**New Garage Alert** was able to get things moved around enough to start installing a set of open cabinets I built to flank both sides of my toolbox and above.

Got the first of two Costco LED fixtures up yesterday, added one more today. Also got the cabinet installed, leveled, and secured to the wall today. I found out a few days ago our 48" flat screen fits perfectly between everything, and boom, now it has a home. Started wiring up the stereo too.

Finally cleaned up some last night, and sanded all my baseboard trim to be painted and reinstalled in the front living room.

unboxed and fired up my new heater. it is small and can remain out of the way. It does a decent job of taking the bite out of the air in about 20 minutes (720sq). Now i can finish up my ceiling insulationthis weekend hopefully.

I have one of those "torpedo" heaters. Friends said it was overkill in Florida, but I love it, and they are currently envious.

Got out the jump starter/charger. Damn Mercedes was dead again, for the 4th time. If I don't drive it every few days it will die, and I can't figure out where the draw is.

Does your car have air suspension? The reason I ask is that for whatever reason, if I park my Town Car for longer than a week without first turning off the air suspension, it will drain the battery.

If you don't have air suspension, disregard my last transmission. :D

No, thankfully! I hear the Mercedes Air Ride is a PITA!

You could do something as simple as pulling one fuse at a time and checking for current flow with a meter.
Does you car have a GPS that remains on?
My friend bought a new Harley with an active alarm and GPS location system. He was not told about this option being on his bike so he did not use a battery maintainer. His fix was to pull the alarm fuse.

been a chilly day at work, i was in no mood to be outside anymore.

i ordered a couple sets of sockets from tekton jan 1st, they showed up yesterday. i had unpacked them yesterday and left them laying in the kitchen..

i got that "look" from the wife after i walked the dog this afternoon, so i took the socket sets out to the garage, and tossed them in the general direction of one of my boxes, didnt even turn the lights on....

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I built a tool cart ended up being bigger than what I meant to build it was supposed to just be a simple cart I ended up with a mobile toolbox and workbench! It has a butcher block top with hinges storage underneath a vise, a cord reel with extension cord, a trash can and a paper towel dispenser.

Speaking of benches. I built this little thingee from rescued bits and pieces. The butcher-block top was a buck at a garage sale. The Singer base was free from a warehouse that was being taken down.
the second table has a ground castiron top. It was a layout table at a ship propeller shop. The base is a hydraulic base, originally used as a motorcycle lift. The top was $10 and the base was free.
I tightened the screws on the Singer yesterday. I moved the lay-out table top to another location and the hydraulic base is going to be repurposed at an out feed for a horizontal metal band saw.

You should do some shopping around. You should be able to get it at least as low as $6 a foot, possibly less... Just sayin...

I've tested the current with all the fuses pulled. Whatever it is, it isn't a fused circuit. It has a factory Nav, but that isn't the issue.

I picked one up a couple years ago that runs on kerosene. Someone had it out by the road for free, all it needed was a new fuel line and it runs like a champ.

Should is not a positive lead.
Your $6/foot in USD is close to $8 CAD.
I know where this distributor is, he has the product, I am in and out in minutes after I flirt with the check-out lady. At $1.50 / litre for Diesel, I am going to the closest store.
There is another option and their price is higher.
This is Canada and our population is 1/10 of the USA and the multiple choice is often not available here. I have to pay a premium on our 75 sent dollar plus shipping if I buy in USA.
Whatever the price, it is just my cost of having fun.

Helped a buddy do a tie rod and ball joint. The ball joint was so jacked up that I had to cut it with a Sawzall. God I hate the rust belt

Helped a buddy troubleshoot an intermittent starter problem. Or rather he helped me figure out that my clamp meter is AC only.

But we did figure out how to conveniently disable his fuel pump, and that Autozone will test cranking amps, so that's halfway to where we were trying to get.

I bought one like that last year. Works great. I fire it up and crack the door open a few inches. Still warms up well and less smell. 15-20 minutes and the garage is nice and toasty.

Right now I have an open ceiling with ridge vent and soffits, you think i still need to crack the door?

I've been kind of eyeing the copper chapstick sleeves that some of the EDC crowd carries, so I decided to make one from some copper pipe. Most of the ones I've seen leave the end of the tube (the twist end) sticking out, but I thought that looked sloppy. So I made mine with a little cap for the twist end as well. I polished it up all shiny, and I'm looking forward to it developing a little patina. It's a little silly, but it was fun to make. They sell for about $25, but I can make one for about $5, including consumables.

That's really neat! I carry my chapstick in my change pocket, that would make it have some patina in a hurry! Is the cold thing a pen?

That is very cool! What did you use specifically for the sleeve? The caps are obvious, but the sleeve isn't...

1/2" nominal ID copper coupler for the sleeve. Little 1/2" caps for the ends. I cut one cap short for the twist end using a hacksaw, then sanded the cut flat on sandpaper sheets on granite. The caps had a logo stamped on them, so I sanded it off. I got everything sized to fit and sanded to 330 grit, then I polished everything with a buffer wheel. I finally glued the caps on, but I put the sleeve in place with just friction (very tight fit), so it is removable when I run out of chapstick. I used Burt's Bees chapstick. Other brands may not fit.

I think I can remove the tail cap when the chapstick runs out and transfer it to a new tube; or else, carefully transfer a new chapstick into the existing tube. Worst case, I make a new tailcap.

The brass item in the foreground is a brass space pen (the bullet model). Available on amazon for about $17. It works pretty well, but I will be replacing the ink cartridge with a finer tip than what it came with, when the time comes. The main thing I like about it is that it's small enough to disappear in my pocket, and I always have a pen on me now.
