I've seen a ton of beautiful garages here so far. Many of them are far beyond what I will ever build. I am probably at least year or so away from being able to build a new garage. Since I don't have a fancy garage to post pictures, I figured starting a thread that is a little out of the norm might be interesting.
For those of you that have built a new garage, post a picture of the garage you replaced and a picture of your new garage.
For the rest of you that are in the same situation as me, post a picture of the garage you want to replace and what you want to replace it with.
Mine is essentially an old barn. My house was built in 1919 and I am assuming the barn went up at the same time. My parent once owned a house across the alley and 2 down, and it was built in the 50's, and it seems to me that the immediate area around my house was very slowly developed as there is probably a 40 year gap between when some neighboring houses were built. Based on this I am assuming my house was probably considered the outskirts of town for quite some time, hence the fact that it is basically a barn and not a normal garage. It still has an attachment on the north side (not pictured), that was once a two-hole outhouse, the seat still remains but the rest was filled in some time back.
At some point in the future I would like to build at least a 28'x32' garage, insulated and heated. I also have some ideas floating in my head of building a shop that is maybe 30'x40', and tall enough to have a living area in the upper level. That is just a dream right now, and it will probably never come to be.
As it stands right now I would really like to get a garage built in a hurry. The barn is basically useless, not enough room to store my 69 GMC (which I would like to start restoring), and it doesn't have power let alone any form of heating. My current goal is to have enough money saved up that I will be able to pay cash for the entire project. Going with a 28x32, I could probably achieve that goal within the next year quite easily. But there are other things to contend with. I work 6.5 hours from home, so in that regard it will be tough to find the time to build it. It is also not entirely necessary to have right now, being that I am only home approximately 1/5 or 1/6 of the year. There is also the issue of finding storage for all the stuff in my barn so that I can tear it down, do some landscaping work, then build a new one. Everytime I think about all that work it makes me wonder if I will ever find time to get the job done.
