What do I have here?

After our town wide yard sale this summer, I stopped at a couple of places that had stacked everything by the road with "free" signs. A few odds and ends made it home with me, including this set of tools.

I'm not sure what they're for, but the majority of them are Snap-On brand. So, out of curiosity what do I have here, is it worth saving or selling?

Zenith carb. tools. OLD! The Zenith carbs that I have seen have all been updraft carbs. This alone is an indication of their age.

PM me if you decide to sell that stuff...I think I am the resident Carb tool nut, and I own Ford vehicles that have Zenith and Stromberg carbs!

Modern Zenith carbs were used on some Porsches in the late 1950's and early 1960's. These Zenith carb's were also sold in the aftermarket for VW's throughout the 1960's. As I recall, they required lots of specialty tools to service them.

Looking at the size of a few of the socket wrenches and plug seating punches, I'd guess it's a service tool set for fairly large Bendix carburetors.

Worth keeping? Only if you plan to overhaul a Bendix injection carb. :)

Might PM ZRX-61 about the kit, he may have a use for them.

You sure the "Bendix Aviation Corporation" bit wasn't the giveaway?

Well, that was obvious... I was referring to the size of the carb the tool kit is likely for.

I don't mean those puny little things they put on big block chevies... ;)

Lots of Volvos too up through the late 80s depending on the market.

I am curious about this comment, why not clean them?

Electrodude,

It could affect the value of your tool kit. Most people who collect this kind of stuff like the "acquired patina" that comes with age. Wire brushing, scrubbing with an 3M pad, or dipping them in carburator cleaner could render them worthless. So, avoid all urges to clean or polish them.

Hope this helps.

What he said. I know some folks who deal with rare coins. He showed me one that should have been worth $400. A previous owner had tried to shine it up to sell it. Reduced it to $5 value. Anyone willing to pay for rarity doesn't want clean.

Bendix controlled Stromberg Carbs way back, certainly by '30's, and went into aircraft carbs much later. Not sure when or if automotive carbs were put under the aviation division...tools I can see relate to multiple 1930's-50's auto carbs.
Lots of legal ****: Stromberg killed and ate Zenith USA operations long ago over patent suits. English/French.Euro Zenith and Stromberg carbs are a separate family, not visibly represented here, and I think may have become linked because of lawsuit. And Stromberg/Bendix aviation carbs are also separate critters relating only through ownership by Bendix. B punched out of auto carbs considerably before carbs went out of use, at a time when Stromberg had few or no OEM applications anymore.

Thanks for answering that lauver, I guess I never thought of tools as "collectible" before. I have turn of the century coopering tools that I still use occasionally when building cedar rail fence... they work really well and I have them.

Last pic...essentially specialized screwdrivers with pilots designed to unscrew particular brass parts without chewing them up.
Specialized sockets...some are exrea thin for particular clearance prroblems, and usually stamped with the famous Snap-on "not guar" logo.
Others cover weird sizes like 13/32 that Zenith enjoyrd using to punish us for nut going metric.
Thing with two holes...no idea, but probably have a catalog or manual with it somewhre!
Many float level gauges, some with a wire feeler gauge thrown in
I think one odd one up there works with a separate internal piece, and forms a tiny square of bras mesh into a new conical internal filter screen for some Stromberg AA's
