Im debating of replacing my two car garage door. Its 10 years old and Im not sure if I just need to replace the opener or if everything needs to be replaced. How can you tell if the actual door is bad? I was wondering what I need to look for when I request quotes from garage door installers? I know there is a lot of people who claim they are garage "installers" but they are actually not. Also, does anyone know any good installers in the Bay Area? What price do I expect to pay for a new 2 car low profile garage door with a liftmaster 3800. Im located in the East Bay. Any thoughts are appreciated.
I will take a stab at this, you said " your not sure if you just need to repalce the opener". I would try these steps because we need more info then this.
1.disengage you opener via the manual release rope
1a. Can you lower and raise your door by hand, with out a lot of effort?
it should travel fairly with out binding or dragging
2. If you disconnected your door and it drops (free falls) either your springs are broke or out of tension. Either get tehm replaced or re-tensioned.
3. If it travels good, but feels like it is dragging lubricate the rollers first while working the door, lubricate the hinge joints next work the door some more. If the rollers are stuck and not rolling replace them.
If the above is working and overall your door is in good shape not bent up. It may just need to be "tuned up". replacing it would be up to you. there generally is not a lot that goes wrong that can not be fixed with a door.
Above is just basic things to do and look for as a homeowner.
Lets sayyou did the above and still decide you want a new door.
Look at doors have a clear idea on what YOU want, not what they want you to have. Do you want "just a door", do you have a room above and would like some insulation in it? Do you want a specific look? It is your money.
Pay attention to what the price includes, is the guy being honest with you. you did some of the above and know your door is toast they should be able to point out some of the things wrong with it that is making them tell you it needs replaced.
You are going down the road of spending money make them list it all out, will they take away your old stuff or is that extra. Are they insured do they sub the work out? and what is the warranty not only on the product, but their labor as well.
You aslo say low profile door, I'm assuming you mean lowheadroom. I fso the LM 3800 is not designed to work with this type of track.
