Hi all.

I’m looking to try and get my work to let me use their discount to buy stuff from Acklands grainger.

I called Auckland’s and asked them what I needed to do this and the lady said an account number from work and a work id, but she didn’t seem confident.

Has anyone else set this type of thing up? I’m in Canada if that applys.

Thanks.

I've always just used our account number here. but i am in the states, and our local granger store knows me by name because of me using them when I was at the dealership too.

Assuming youre paying cash and not a work purchase. Just go into the branch. My branch new me from work so I just got it (small town). If they dont recognize you , just ask "Can I get that at *** company pricing?" . They should do it if the manager isnt an ***, which isnt a given. Phonecalls or web orders likely wont get the same positive response. Way too much fishing and other BS going on now. In person is the way.

Branch counter staff wont check if your info is valid, aint nobody got time for that. Without knowing your employeer, Id be a little careful about mentioning using their acct info for your own private purchases to them. Definitely feel that one out before charging in there asking for acct numbers etc.

Don't ask.
I usually find the prices to be less on ZORO (Grainger's E-marketing site), and often get E-mailed discount codes for 10% to 20% off.

I had no idea Zoro and Grainger had any affiliation... Then again, I don't shop on Zoro.

I've yet to figure hiw Grounger is still in business.
They are almost always more expensive than anywhere else. Sometimes 2,3,4x more.

Corporate accounts.
Im in this business with one of Grangers competitors. Big corp acts. can get items less than staff. Low single digit margin on some things.

Just a guess but the lady is probably right. While I don't have a Grainger account, I let friends and family buy stuff on my other accounts at my contractor pricing all the time. The supply house just brings up my account, but runs it through as a cash sale instead of a charge, it appears to be a matter of what box the salesman needs to click on.

Indeed. I'm sure only a fraction of their sales come from private citizens not associated with an industrial or corporate account.

A previous employer or two used Grainger, I know CAT did for sure.
My current employer uses Grainger, in fact I place a Grainger order once a week. It's not cheap by any means and amazing how fast things add up, 10 rolls of tape can be $600+.

I also sent a email to granger to see what they said. I will post back.

If you're paying grainger's list prices, you're probably doing it wrong. Many customers get much better prices than what's at zoro, with discounts based on how much they spend.

The account i have is with a multi-billion $$ company. Lot of times online or local is cheaper.

Somehow a Grounger purchase is generally not looked at too much, but spend 25% less for the same product online and it gets questions

30+ years ago I bought a Waterloo tool chest personally at Grainger using my work connection. It involved calling the local location on the phone, talking to the manager?, making the deal, and then walking in and either paying cash or using a CC. It's been so long that I can't remember all of the details, but 100% remember getting the box there. I did get the industry discount that my workplace would pay, but we also ordered stuff from them all the time.

There is ALOT of backdoor **** that goes on. Kickbacks from vendors etc. That bring that +25% down to a -5% at the end of the day. Ive learned a lot of stuff I had no idea about prior.

Weird how that works. Company i work.for is similar. A product might cost $2500 for one customer but be $3000 or more for another.

We have a couple PITA customers that get billed the highest. Mostly PITA on the $$ side, like constantly late payments, even with 90+ day billing. One customer is 4-6 months from time of billing to payment. And typically high 5 to 6 figure bills.

The ****** thing if it i say sorry, can't bill more cause your company owes too much, heads would roll and I'd accomplish nothing.
