The seller is asking $500 firm for it. It's a few hours drive from me and definitely heavier than i need but the price isn't bad. Just not sure how i feel about all the holes.

what would be the purpose of wanting a thousand pound table full of large holes?

I think the holes make it more versitale, can bolt stuff down etc. For a table its pretty heavy duty compared to $200 - $400 tables. I think its a fine deal, for the drive I would probably ask to take $50 off.

It would hold up a mill, lathe, or similar precision machine really well. Holes are convenient for attaching such machine.

Looks like this table was built for a specific purpose. And that is a LOT of steel.

If you need to ask...chances are you don't need it. :bounce:

But to the OP...I wouldn't hesitate to buy that at all...I've built a couple tables with 3/4" Tops and I wouldn't sell any of them to anybody for $500.00 so that's a good deal.

The holes are something you don't realize you need until you don't have em. My dad has some random holes in one of his tables...it works awesome. I built mine using a sheet of new steel so its virgin and It send shivers up my spine to think about drilling big holes in it...but once I can borrow my cousins Mag drill again, I plan on rotobroaching a couple random holes in my top.

Two elephants for a nickle is a good deal...if you need two elephants and you have a nickle.

If you do a bunch of fabrication that would be more convenient on a table that size, you have the shop space and you have $500.00 that's a pretty darn good deal.

Handy thing to have around for jigs and fixtures. You can build jigs for making identical weldments, tube headers, anything like that. Drill and tap holes as needed using a mag drill. We had 6X10 foot cast iron tables we used like that.

I would definitely like something larger, but for my suburbia-sized 3 car i think it's would fit way better than anything deeper. Y'all pretty much convinced me. Trying to lock it down now. I'll update this weekend with what happens.

Looks like an old die plate ... scrap/trade it and get a good plate that's a little thinner and cleaner. The rest of it looks nice.

Cleaner? That thing was Blanchard ground. You won't find a cleaner surface.

I'd say it's totally worth $500. It is too bad some holes are large and proprietary to something they had. Maybe that's what bmx meant by clean.

1.5" steel is hell of a chunk that will not let you down though.

EDIT: IF you wanted to get real fancy, you could cut plugs that fit snug in the large holes that have a flange on the bottom side that bolt into the tapped holes on the bottom side of the table. For all practical purposes it would work just fine.

Yep, Cleaner ... as in smaller holes and a random bolt pattern. If he had a cleaner plate, as in one with no holes, he could put down a usable pattern.

Just because it's blanchard ground, doesn't mean it's flat either. It was scrapped for a reason. Still a nice plate, but something you could move around would be nice.

Plate weighs about 600lbs.

I dont mind those 4 holes at all. They are cut cleanly and look profesional. They are pretty small compared to the rest of the table. To cut those 4 holes that well would take quite a bit of time and / or a machine that I dont have. I am 50 / 50 on the holes. They dont bother me.

I would prefer having the holes to not having them. How else do you use your bessey clamps to clamp something down to the middle of the table? Or clamp something down that has something sticking out from the base? (yes, there are other ways...but this is just convenient). Do check that it's flat and was not warped when someone torched the holes out, assuming they did.

Would be an awesome welding table. Sort of a poor-ish man's acorn table.

Just to have the top blanchard ground would cost you most of his asking price, not to mentioned getting the top and building the whole thing. I'd buy it, but you also have to have a need for it. You would most likely be able to sell it for what you pay for it if you decide you don't want it.

I'd use one hole for mainshaft buildup, and set up a drain for oil under another hole.

It's lower than I'd want, but that's easy to fix. Good luck and update when one of you gets it. LOL

Buying a table like that, I assume you have some manner of crane. The welder at the shop I worked at had a table sort of like that, his was cut for working on a specific type of twin screw compressor that we rebuilt several a year. He kept a sheet of... 3/4? inch plate that he'd weld down when he needed the full table, and grind off and lean on the wall when the compressors came in.

If he does sell it no big loss, I think you can do better for much less. Personally, I'm rather tired of welding on my current steel table bc it doesnt clean up like the iron tables Ive used in the past. I see a ton of old iron machine tables around selling for not much more than scrap, gonna add legs to one later this summer for a new T-slotted fixture/welding table.

a 36" tall heavy steel top table is the middle-road of table choices especially when it has inconsistent holes in the table. I just can't see it as a regular workbench or even a welding table, it's really not great for any special work.

For $500, I think it's a bad purchase.

What kind of table are you looking to buy and use for?
