In the late 70's early 80's I worked in a high end racing / automotive machine shop. The one tool I miss is a drill press. This one had what I thought was called an air-table but I don't know the name I guess because searching on Google never leads me to them - or they were uncommon. Basically the shelf of the drill press was multiple parts with compressed air hooked up to them. When the lock was released and air pressure applied, one could move the part bolted to the shelf/table in any direction they wanted like it was on ice. Then once it was in position one could let the air off and it would lock in place. There might have been a magnetic component to it too but that I don't recall. You could bolt a head to it, slide the head to align it with a stripped hole, or to pin it, or to drill out for a false guide, when done apply air pressure and then slide the head to the next spot you wanted to drill. Might have been 30" x 14" or thereabouts. Anyone know if air-table is the correct name or ???
