What do you do with your old tools once you upgrade to a newer or better tools i have a lot of tools that i have just upgraded as i started out for quanity not quality now i have seen the light

They go to my home toolbox. I always figure my work tools make me money my home tools cost me money

I take a lot of my old tools up to the cottage and leave them rather than taking stuff back and forth
I have given a few away to friends as well , that way I can visit them when helping out with their projects lol

I personally find I cannot get rid of tool.....ever.
You should make up a dating kit. When your daughter starts to (or brings home a date), they have to play name the tools. The more you can name, the longer the date.

I keep adding them to other toolboxes. The best stuff is in the garage, then the duplicates (in decreasing quality) get put into my woodworking bucket, my desk-job work toolbox, my bedroom/upstairs toolbox, and then my junkyard/emergency box that lives in the truck. The bottom of the barrel go in the junk drawer.

i never throw away wrenches / sockets / screw drivers, i always modify them for some awkward situation jobs, old / worn out power tools go in the trash can.
I do hand stuff down to my son, but I find that difficult. He's a tool abuser.

Old power tools I usually eBay. Even if they are broken (yes, I disclose this). Sockets, wrenches and such are kept.

Most of my old hand tools are as good or better than anything new that I could replace them with so I use them. I have upgraded a few power tools and passed the the old ones on to a brother in law. I have never replaced a tool simply because it is old, only if it is lost, broken or worn out.

I agree with Larwyn on this, I would never "upgrade" just to do it, there would have to be a problem.

^^^^^^^^X2 I rarely have the need to part with tools. You can never have too many tools...
I assemble extra tool boxes. I now have a box of tools in each truck (I have 3), I have a set of tools in the basement, a set of tools in the garage, and a set of tools in the shop. I've even put together a tool kit for my wife.
Heck, I still have the wrenches and socket set I bought when I was 16 years old. Everything still works. And it brings back memories and smiles when I use tools from my youth, or tools that belonged to my dad.

most of my original tools have been replaced with truck brands over the last 30 years.
all the old stuff has a home my garage boxes.
i have a few hand tools in the house, for 'round the house DIY, keep a couple things in my truck, some with my harley, and a few stashed away in my trail truck.
occasionally i do have to buy something new, but it's more in the way of woodworking powertools, or used/HF tools for things i've "done without" or got by with something else for many years.

Depends. I had a ton of older imported tools that were of questionable quality, I put them in an old plastic toolbox out front with a "free" sign on it. My older name brand stuff, I either sell on ebay or Craigslist.

Extra tools from my shop go into the toolbox in my car trailer or are kept in another box to be used as "Loaners"... I too have a hard time getting rid of old tools unless they are broken.
Right! I buy tools with the intention of keeping them for as long as possible, if not for the duration of my life. I try to buy the best tool I can afford the first time I buy a tool, keeping in mind what I will be using the tool for, how often I'll use it, economy, etc. I'd say that 98% of the tools I own are those that I bought new many years ago and still use regularly. I don't really care for the term "upgrade." Upgrading a tool is a matter of personal opinion when you factor in intended use, frequency of use, cost, etc. Sometimes a tool that's perceived as being "lower grade" is actually the best tool for the job. It really comes down to the person using the tool.

Hang onto mine for a few months. Then put em back into rotation if the new ones don't cut it (has happened before!), or save them as back-ups, or add them to my box at home if they're needed. If they don't stay at work or go into my box at home they get piled in a box and gradually sold/traded off OR modified for special jobs.

I agree...However....I give my brother my old tools under the guise of "upgrading" He won't let me just outright give him tools, so if I tell him I needed a better "whatchamacallit", then he'll take them. In some instances I've bought the same tool, though I was almost caught doing that once. "Hey, aren't those the same pliers you gave me?". If it wasn't broken and is good enough for family, it's probably good enough for me.

Home use, trade, sell, loan out. Just depends on what it is. Most of them wind up in my dad's boxes to help him upgrade his HF stuff.

Not a professional wrench, so my priorities may be different.
Home--> Work box--> Garage Sale--> Salvation Army thrift store.
Then there are the ones which don't get used much (Sentimental or Collection). They stay in the old SO box.

x2 on this. You can always use tools in another location. Old car tools can be stored in the basement, so in those few occasions you need a metric socket inside the house, you don't need to go to the garage to get it.
I still have 2 of the first 3 the first tools I ever bought. My 8" adjustable wrench is still in my primary tool box, my 6" slip joint pliers are in my basement tool box. The 5 in 1 screwdriver I bought at the same time is no more, unfortunately, the plastic handle sort of rotted and crumbled, and I tossed it. I still have all 5 bits for it though.
