What do you do with your hammers?

I like restoring old blunt striking objects. Everything from hand axes to ball peen/machinists/engineers hammers to carpenter's hammers with different faces and claws. Then there's the other one-off stuff like mason's hammers, metal working hammers, wooden metal working hammers, wooden woodworking hammers, etc.

What works for you?

I've spent some time looking on Google images. I like the idea of a wall rack so you can "just grab a hammer" but I'm also really trying to be as non-cluttered looking as possible. So at same time not sure I really want to dump a giant pile of hammers into a big bin/drawer.

The only thing I know at this point is I'm torn between making one storage space/rack/place for the stuff I use often/daily (everything from a framing hammer to my go-to hand sledge to a deadblow and the rubber mallet I use for paint cans.

If I do that I'd probably be fine putting the rest in one place. The alternate would be organizing them somewhat by type.

I did Google. So much came up that I didn't find any GJ threads on this.

Thanks. (I've got about 55 hammers I want to organize)

Well, my initial reaction to your title was 'I hit stuff with them' :lol_hitti

That's a tough one - I store them in a drawer because I only have 6 or 7. I think you are on the right track though - put the most used ones in the toolbox and the rest out of the way somewhere.

Mine fill 5 or 6 drawers spread across 4 tools boxes. There's 16 in this drawer now...

Ayuh,.... I too, have a pile of strikin' instruments,....

Each of my many toolboxes has at least 1, many of my toolboxes have many hammers,.....

My "Go To"s are in my pickup of course, a 20lb'er on a short handle, 'n an 8lb'er on a short handle in the bed, under the cross-box, 'n my ole faithful 20 oz. estwin framin' beatin' stick, just inside the cross-box on my side, under the slidin' shelf,....

They range in size, from a tiny upholsterer's tack hammer, to 20 lb BFHammers on full length handles,....

I keep hammers in a drawer in my tool box. I made a stand out of two pieces of 1X stock, joined at 90 degrees. Slots in the vertical one, to hit each hammer handle. alternating head direction lets you fit more handles. The picture is not the current set up (which is two of them at opposite sides), but gives the general idea.

I mainly keep 'em where I use em'

Big Ball peen, heavy copper face, and a cheap claw, on the bench by the vise.

Deadblows, rubber mallets, soft faced, generally stored in a couple of the tool box drawers along with the brass head hammers, smaller coppers, drilling hammer and other peens.

All my steel rips Estwing Milwaukee and Craftsman are in my job tool bucket...just where I need them

Another 5 gal bucket has a cheap rip hammer, and a small sledge along with a stubby DBE wrench and adjustable for my garden work...driving fence T posts and adjusting and straightening bent parts on my mulchlayer. Again just where I need them.

One cheapie Tekton rip stays out in the greenhouse ain't much good for nothing else

Big boy toys like large sledges and mauls (along with the axes) stand alone either in the garage or shed

I do need a new small sledge broke the handle on my 4lb recently :(

I try not to have too many duplicate hammers. I do have different sizes, though. I have 5 sizes of Lixie dead-blow hammers. About 6 or 7 sizes of ball pein hammers. A dedicated set of body hammers. I keep them where I need them. Some hang on the wall, some are in tool boxes. I have three copper ($$$) hammers- one for my machine shop, one in my tool cart, and another in my tote for the junkyard. I have about 5 claw hammers. but only like one of them.

I don’t have too many. The ball peen and deadblow are in a drawer. Claw and framing hammers spread around where I use them. I have a friend that has about 10 5 gallon buckets full of hammers stacked the the corner of his garage.

This thread is timely, in that I recently pulled out 4 claw heads that have been rolling around in a drawer for the past several years. All are pre 1960 I would guess. I already have at least 20 ball peen and claw hammers , so I need more hammers like I need a hole in my head, but I will get handles on them anyways, then decide what to do with them.

One thing I dislike about deep drawers is the waisted vertical space. Build some organizers from some scrap 1x4 I had laying around. Just the necessary hammers go here. Works well for my needs. Everything you see in the drawer comes out without binding. The rest of my hammers are spread between tool belts or tool buckets so they are always readily available and ready to go.

I have a horrible storage system. Perhaps this picture will shame me into becoming more organised. :lol_hitti

I keep most of my hammers in on of the bottom drawers of my roll away. I also have a few that I use for machining hanging on the wall next to my mill.

I honestly don't understand the need to stockpile so many of the same item especially if they don't have much use. I'd personally start flipping them instead of keeping that way your hobby is turning some coin and you can keep locating new pieces without this kind of worry

I keep a mid size ball peen on a hook over my bench, so I can grab it if something needs hitting. If something needs hitting differently, I keep a couple of different size ball peen, rubber mallet, copper/hide and a mid size lump hammer in the hammertime draw in my cab. The claw, chipping and panel hammers are in the house where they'll get used, the sledge is in the shed ready for something needing hitting really hard.

I don't see the need for lots of duplication, I'd rather be able to find the one I need easily, although having a bit of duplication is handy for when I loose the one i had 10s ago.

Small sledges, dead blows, body hammers and ball peens are in tool box drawers. Claw hammers are hanging on the wall with other woodworking tools in the shed.

I have mine in 2 narrow toolbox drawers. Steel in one drawer, plastic/rubber/brass in the second. There's 6 or 7 in each.

Not really hammers. They are top forming tools for blacksmithing. They are struck with a hammer to form the hot material.

Ok first I love your anvil. Second those are really cool forming tools you have any pictures of your work?

Not really. This is all I could find. Someone mentioned going out to find some hookers and I figured I’d try making my own...
