I am looking for advise or experience for ceiling speakers, I am going to put 2 pairs in my garage ceiling over the workbench area and near the engine bay where I stand. Is it pleasant to have music blasting over your head.. or annoying?

I'd advise you go to the local Goodwill and pick up a pair of discarded home speakers and mount them to your garage wall. You need the cabinets for full-range - they will sound much better than any ceiling speakers. Most ceiling speakers are meant for PA and muzak service, and I expect they will have a limited frequency range from about 100-4k Hz.

Plus, there's no point in having stereo if you're going to mount the speakers in the ceiling. Most sources today will be stereo or even more channels - you'll have to buy some special equipment (ie old monaural receiver or a PA amp) to make a monaural source.

They also make expensive ceiling speakers for $200 each not just the supermarket type. In this case I really would like ceiling speakers because the previous owner have put 2x 8" holes in the ceiling and a rotting paper cone speaker on there. I am looking for something to cover the hole might as well go that route.

I have a handed down receiver from the house unit; replaced a Pioneer with a Onkyo. Speakers are Klipsch (out door rated) wall mounts that I lucked into at a garage sale.

We have direct tv and for an extra $5 a month we have a reciever in the shop. My dad got a new T.V so we now have a 30" for our visual pleasure and pioneer reciever and speakers left from a divorce. Total cost about $75000. Ha Ha. Anyway ours is nothing more than a tringle shelf in one corner, speakers are under the tv and reciever. No noticibe echo, but my walls are covered with painted osb and there is alot of stuff usually in the shop to absorb sound. The direct tv is very nice, watch the race on Sunday, then a little Andy Griffith, and finally stop over at Willie's place(satellite radio).

It's hard to beat the sound of a Wurlitzer jukebox (or two) in the garage! Plus, I've got a Pioneer 500 watt sound system with 18-disc CD player all hooked to a complete sound-activated dance club lighting system. Great for garage parties!

They are wired and do play but I have a pair of shelf speakers for the real sound.

I have a similar set up in my shed. One set of speakers has the 12 volt light on it so when the movie finished the lights came on. I rarely put that one outside now as they are to valuable. Mine have the radio playing through them all day.

I like having music in the garage, but I don't want anything "nice" in an environment that isn't the best for electronics. I don't have heat or air conditioning in it, & it's detached from the house, so all that's there for a music system is an AKAI bookshelf stereo my boss gave me when he replaced it with another one.

It has an AM-FM radio, a twin cassette deck, & 3 CD changer that doesn't work anymore. I have a $10 portable CD player I plugged into it to play CD's. Most of the time though, I just don't want to get grease & dirt on CD's so I just have the radio on for a baseball game since I hate radio for music. It does sound decent for "something" to listen to, but not what my choice would be if money were no object.

I did buy a clearance transmitter/reciever from Radio Shack so I can play a music source from the house, like the computer or the satellite & stereo, to the unit in the garage but I still need an adaptor wire. I may also just hook up a pair of speakers to wire I ran in the underground conduit to play something, but I hate not having the volume or ability where I am to shut it off or lower it.

I'd rather finish the car than start a new stereo project.....LOL.

I still had my Bachelor's Sound System - one side doesn't work, plays cassette tapes and radio - LOUD enough though. Also have my wifes bachelorette TV - At least it's hooked up to Satellite! The only time I watch TV is on the weekends - SPEED Channels POWERBLOCK!

Well, my garage tunes are a combination of things. To start with I had my old Hitachi stereo receiver with a pair of Pioneer HPM40 speakers mounted up high above the double garage door. I then added a pair of Jensen Indoor/outdoor speakers in the corners opposite to fill the room with sound. Later on we upgraded our family room with a Bose Lifestyle system that had 2 zones.... It's hooked into the Hitachi with basically acts as a amp only. The Bose system has a RF remotes so I can control AM/FM, 6 changer CD, TV/Cable broadcast as well as computer output anywhere with in about a 50 foot range ... in addition I added outdoor speakers on the patio which I can control with the RF remote too. Sweet!
Also in the garage I have a 32" LCD with CD and VCR for my viewing enjoyment.
At some point I'll upgrade the house system with a newer Bose Lifestyle that can support more zone so I can enjoy sound in more locations in the house.... I just love to have the music on.... mostly all the time!

I have four speakers placed in the corners, this way I can have a reasonably uniform volume no matter where I am. I don't like getting blasted so this evens things out a bit.

Working on my garage remodel now, I have used this system in my home for several years. www.sonos.com

I plan on buying two nice ceiling mount speakers and a Sonos amp/receiver to extend it to the Garage. I have been super happy with it, we started out with the 2 zone kit and since have expanded it through the whole house and Patio/BBQ area. Have 5 zones now and will be adding the 6th in the garage. Originally I planned to install my kick *** stereo from the 70's, individual components driven by a Phase Linear 400 (200 watts per channel), ESS Amt monitor speakers, TEAC reel to reel, etc.,etc. but all this stuff takes up to much room, plus its more nostalgic, I still have all my vinyl and cases of recorded reels from my time in the service. Maybe some day I will build a room for the sound stuff separately.

I routed speaker wires in the walls during my build and then built shelves for the speakers and the tuner.

Once we close escrow I am putting in 2 sets of 6.5" wall mounts connected to my boom box in the cabinets already mounted.

When I built my shop I ran conduits for speakers piped out from the house. My home system is fairly run-of-the-mill, a several hundred watt Oynko reciever surround-sound thingy with 2 Sony 400 disc changers hooked up together. I just put it on random and let 'er go. #2 is deciding what to play while #1 is playing and the fool things always seem to know what I want to hear next! 55% or so of volume will drown out the ringer on the phone, so that's where I like to keep it.

I've got a mish mash of an entertainment system really...

37" NEC CRT (No TV tuner) it's got multiple input options so I use it for a couple things.

1.Connected to Satellite for watchin TV and listening to Sirius Satellite music.
2.As a computer monitor for surfin and for mp3 music.
3.As well as a center channel for my sound system in the shop.
IMG_4522.jpg

These sit on either side of the shop. 15" subs with horns. I've got 4 other speakers set around the shop.
15inSpeakers.jpg

They are driven by a Niles 2 channel amp.
SI-2125med.gif

Needless to say it makes for great poker nights!! Some times I push it and upset the wife every once & a while when I forget how late it is and crank it up after she has gone to bed. The bass shakes the windows 120ft away from the shop no problem!:shocking:

Sounds like most of us have a tuner setup with TV ,mp3 ,cd hookup. I picked up a sony tuner that has A&B speaker on it so I could inside speakers on or outside speakers on or both. my system is set up inside a pantry cabinet I picked up at home depot it keeps everything clean and its big enough inside so it stays cool. just my 2cents good luck

My garage audio comes way of Adcom. I've got two GFA-555 II amplifiers running bridged at 1200w into 11 speakers.

My twin amps pull double duty as space heaters while running bridged.:)

I've got a Whole House audio/video system installed (Partly, but adding as I can) and have a Dish network reciever with Sirius, a 300 Disk CD changer, or Ipod/PC input for use. I can send audio to any of 5 rooms in the house right now, eventually to be 8 rooms (2 outside zones) and each will be able to play whatever it wants. Right now they all will play the same thing though. But there is Incieling speakers in each of the rooms, including 2 8" and 2 6.5" in the garage (and a space for a inceiling sub that I need to buy and the amp for it) All the equipment is in my basement and there are IR recievers in each room to control volume and input from where ever I am. It's plenty loud enough for the house and the garage, and the sound is excelent as I am running some nice JBL inceiling speakers. Once I get some extra money there will be a 42"+ LCD in the Garage wall mounted and connected to the whole system. I think it will be nice when done.

Another "retired" home system here. Kenwood receiver, Pioneer 5 cd player, playing through a cheap truck box speaker combo (the all-in-one kind you put behind the seat). The speaker box is screwed to the wall using angle brackets. Not fancy, but it gets the job done. :)

I'm still putting together all the components. I just acquired a bass bin from the theatre in my hometown in Ky. It is a 1939 RCA Shearer bass cabinet that houses 2 woofers, 15" diameter. I have just bought 2-15" JBL 2226H woofers to put in the cabinet. This is a pic of the cabinet after my buddy pulled it out of the theatre.
PDR_04041.jpg

You can see the back side of the cabinet where the 2 woofers will mount.
PDR_04031.jpg

I will be powering the bass bin with a Crown K2 amp putting out 2500 watts bridged into the 2 woofers @ 4 ohms.

It will operate up to 400hz where it will be crossed over to the mid/high speakers which will contain 2 Audax PR170MO 6 1/2" midranges(combined efficiency of 105db/1 watt. and then to a Ciare tweeter with a matching 105db efficiency rating.

I have Solus I/O speakers mounted above the garage door and another pair of Solus speakers up high on the side walls for side fill.
P1010857.jpg

Haven't finalized the 7.1 receiver choice yet or wether or not I'll just use my Pioneer Elite c72 preamp with a Yamaha DSP-1 signal processing unit for the rear channels. It's a work in progress hopefully to be finished within the next several months. I wanna start JAMMIN:bounce:

I have a old computer that I have my mp3s on. I have a couple of vintage old jukeboxes I restored in the house. But its dusty and dirty at times so I don't want one of them out there.

Yamaha receiver and speakers from a yard sale ($15.00). XM receiver from my truck plugs into a dock. Speakers hung on wall out of the way.

I got an old Marantz receiver hooked to 4 speakers in the corners of the garage, but I only use it for auxiliary input. I usually bring my laptop out there and plug it in, and I use shoutcast.com as my station. Hundreds of great stations in any genre, free, and with no commercials. The same laptop manages the tunes at the tattoo shop also.

I upgraded my laptop a couple years ago. I used my old laptop as a music "server". I loaded about 20GB of my favorite music on it (about 100 hours worth), and play it through a surround sound system in the shop. I use Windows Media Player and set it on random shuffle on a continuous loop. Always good music on, and no commercials! I wish I had done it long ago . . . .
