What do you pay for additional storage? Is it worth it?

So here’s my deal I have a 30 x 40 garage that currently is full of ATV projects and dirt bikes I also have a 18 foot car hauler 12 foot utility trailer 30 foot camper a trail vehicle and three commuting vehicles. I’ve been renting my neighbors 40 x 60 machine building in less then best shape but mostly dry for $50 a month. I recently cleared it out thinking I would save a little cash but find with all my stuff at my house driveway/garage I am too crowded to get much organized but I also find when using extra storage I get less motivated to complete projects who wants to set my head straight[emoji849][emoji16]?

50 bucks a month for that much covered, mostly dry storage is a gift.
With that many projects, the 50 bucks a month is a drop in the bucket, but it seems you need to pare down the projects.

Op I'm with you. I'm a bit cluttered at times and it ***** the life out of me. Having to constantly play Tetris doesn't motivate. If I could solve that issue for $50 a month I'd jump all over it. That or sell stuff that doesn't get used anymore.

Assuming you're using or have access to use most of it, that's 25 cents per square foot per year.

That's a good price per month I'm guessing just about anywhere. You're getting it per year.

One could argue that that you're offsetting depreciation by $600 per year on all your stuff. Just think about all the tires alone that are out of the sun and on a mostly dry floor?

I'd drive a heck of a lot further than my neighbors to store my projects for that price.

You have potential cash sitting...

Yep. $50/month is a good deal for what you're getting. But it's still an expense. You've got too much stuff. Time to sell it and eliminate the storage expense while also adding to your coffers.

Colin Chapman is often quoted as saying "Simplify, then add lightness." He was referring to race cars, but that idea can apply to life as well. Your **** is weighing you down and costing you money. Time to move on.

If 50 bucks solves it? Respectfully, it sounds more like it's just giving him more Tetris pieces.

I sold two collector cars and two tractors, with more to go. I have 1600 square feet of barn at home and 10,000 square feet off site, but I am tired of having so much stuff that I forget what I have. Sell the stuff, put the money in your IRA, and when you retire you can buy something really cool.

I would agree that's a good deal.
BUT...
I have to agree with others here. In my case out of sight out of mind, I would probably just acquire "new" projects that take up space.
Sell of a few things put that money into the best 2 projects and the rest into an IRA....

NOW... if I only took my own advice....

It's a low rate but you're still paying $50/month procrastination tax. In my opinion storage should only be for situations where you face a temporary shortage of space - like if you were refinishing your garage slab - not for warehousing an ever-expanding backlog of projects.

The best thing I ever did was sell my back-burner car projects and bring everything home from my storage unit to force myself to deal with it. Okay, so I'm still surrounded by boxes, but at least the stacks are getting shorter.

Realistically the opening poster only has 3 choices to choose from.

One - He could get rid of some of the stuff he has, that is to say, fix the stuff, sell the stuff, or throw the stuff away.

Two - He could build a bigger shop, or he could add on to the shop he already has.

Three - He can continue to rent space at a very cheap rate.

Having a neighbor right next door willing to rent you that much space for that price is almost like having a shed of you own, only better. To build a shed that size would cost several thousand dollars, not to mention the additional property taxes. This way he gets to use a large building for a small token fee.

i never understood why people have so many "projects" that none of them get completed. To me its mentally and financially draining to have this situation. I can barely sleep when one machine isnt completed, much less a huge shop full of them and in an offsite storage unit as well.

I do however have several vehicles that I rotate into and out of service as needed or wanted. However when I rotate one from use to storage, I go ahead and service that machine into fully ready to go status, turn fuel off, run carb dry with a ethanol free fuel and put it on the Battery tender. I also clean and detail that machine. If you dont make a habit of doing this, eventually you end up with a shop full of stuff that all needs something.

when I had to place my house on the market I rented the biggest one they got, 10x30. It's NOT really 10x30, the ribs and all makes it small.

It was about $280 for first 2 months and $580 a month afterwards
... let me tell you when you pay that much per month to store your "stuff" .. you don't really forget what's out there. LOL

Yea I had to rent two garages at my apt complex because vandalism was terrible and I needed shop space. Cost me $200 a mth and that went on for almost 3 years. such a waste of dough. I wish I could have all the rent, and storage money back I wasted.

I would gladly pay $50 to stash a bunch of my **** in my neighbor's garage. In fact, for that price I'd keep the garage rented no matter if I had anything in it or not.

I'd love to pare down , but having two garden tractors is sooooo much better than one.

I only got the quad, off-road truck and DD car as far as **** that should be mobile at all times. Bronco is getting there. Quad sits until I get a truck and toy hauler. Quad will be parked in toy hauler at a near by RV storage lot for 100$ a month.

I am working hard at getting the truck done and more pieces out of cupboards and off the floor so I can buy some of the bigger tools I want like TIG/Stick machine and a press.

Next spring I will be building a garden shed that will store the garden tools, and scrap steel to make even more floor space.

Your neighbor is enabling your "problem" with a convenient location, and cheap price. I waste more than $50 on poor decisions every month, so I am being a bit hypocritical, but yeah, you're never going to get all these projects finished if you can just stash them away.

Also, $50=50 cans of beer/month; $50=2.5 lap dances/month;$50=100 pawn shop Craftsman sockets/month; $50=X# of your favorite whatever/month

a few years ago i shared a shop space with a couple friends. cost me $100 a month. i had room for my off road toy, tools and equipment, problem was i accumulated more stuff...

we moved out of the shop space, and all my "stuff" had to come back home to my garage. i ran out of room very quickly, and scrapped a lot of parts and pieces i had accumulated.

i'm much better off now without all the "stuff".

Or...take more stuff out of your main garage and store it at your cheap rented spot...then rent out that space in your garage for $100 a month...now your making some money for more beer, lap dances and pawn shop finds!

The place where people talk about buying an 8th set of sockets is lecturing people about having too much stuff?:headscrat :lol_hitti

I'd kill for that storage deal. I ended up having to sell a few bikes when I moved and to buy something to replace them is going to cost me a heck of a lot more than I would have spent on the storage to hang on to them while I worked on other projects.

Right now I'm looking at $50 a month for a 5x10 just to store my bike and a few other things over the winter. Lots of stuff doesn't get used very often, but it's cheaper to store than to keep rebuying or even renting (if possible) when I need it. I'd love to have covered storage for my little camper for the 50 weeks out of the year it's just sitting. Having all the rarely used stuff out of the garage so I could put that space to use would be amazing. I've been putting off buying a truck for a couple years now due to lack of space and it's starting to cost me quite a bit to rent or pay for delivery when I need something too big for the Jeep.
