What do you use to line your toolbox?

I recently got a brand new tool trolley/chest combo and I want something to line and protect the trays. I was looking at foam sheeting but that stuff is going to cost a lot more than I got a toolbox for.

I'm interested to see what you guys line your toolbox with so I can get some ideas.

I use the stuff that super markets line their produce shelves with. Like if you dig to the bottom of the apple stack that is what you will see. It is cushion-enough, stickey-enough, thin and by far the cheapest source I have found. Not sure what the availability is in your country, but I'd imagine the super markets use the same type of material.

A picture for reference

I'm glad you posted this, I've been meaning to ask here... I have this stuff in my tool box...

I bought it about 5 years ago from sears, it came in a pack of 5 or 6 large sheets - it's an open weave, very soft and things stay put even when moving the box around. I would like to get an another pack or two of it to use in something else, but I stopped in Sears the other day to get more of this and they apparently no longer carry it - figures, something that actually works as intended they get rid of... anyway, anyone know who made this for Sears and where to get it? I tried kitchen drawer liner, which looks very similar to this, but it doesn't preform as well (it's not as thick or soft).

Home Depot and Lowes carry something similar. I like to use truck box liner from HD (it's thicker), but it only comes in a 17" wide roll. For wider drawers I tape two pieces together with Gaffer's tape underneath.

I have used old yoga mats picked up at carport sales for cheap. Smart or not smart as they rubber, dimpled and about as thick as whats pictured above, but not an open weave?

Thanks for your help guys. I had an idea of what I wanted but couldn't figure out what the mats were called but you have helped me find it.

I see this stuff at op shops all the time. Next time I go op shopping I will keep an eye out for the matting. Not too urgent because I haven't had much time to use my tools.

I use this thick rubber stuff. At my work they use it for making carpets for cars, but it works very well in toolboxes. My MAC box is lined with this stuff and so is my SO box at work. So far not complaints about it.

I will try to get you the name for it when I go back to work.

The local dollar stores (Dollerama) carry that material in 10 foot rolls for $3 per roll. They also have it in different colours

Harbor has that stuff for $6 something a roll cheapest I've found.

This stuff works great. I have it lining my side cabinet and also on the top of my toolbox where I work on, so I won't scratch my wood top.

I switched from the stuff pictured above to the HF mat and for the price its great.

I use the stuff from harbor freight. It's really tacky drawer liner made for tool boxes. It's like what you would use in your home cabinets or drawers to protect them. They are not prefect, but work well for now.

I buy yoga mat at a store here called 5 Below. Everything in the store is $5 or less. 24 inch wide x 68 inch for $5. Stays put in the drawers and the tools don't move. Best stuff I have found locally that actually looks like tool box liner.

wally world carries this as shelf lining. They have this kind that's not solid and they have a solid kind that's a little more expensive, but much much better. It's about 1/8" thick and I think the rolls are 18 or 24" wide.

That's a great idea.

I bought some liner material at Lowe's the other day and it doesn't grip at all. The Sears stuff (similar to what is shown above) is slightly better, but still not great. A good tacky yoga mat might be just the ticket.

I use the 3 dollar doormats from home depot. They look good and the whole back is a rubber non slip. They have ridges also to help stuff stay in place a little bit.

I have a mixture of things. I have some with the rubber weave..some with commercial grade carpeting and used conveyor belting

Anyone else on here use carpet? The stuff I use I got from lowes. Was 49 cents a square foot. Comes 12 ft wide by however long you want. It stays flat in the drawers and gives a nice quiet cushion for your tools and is very durable

I'm cheap. I just use the cardboard that the box was packaged in.

Easy to cut to fit. Holds up for years (yes even when I was a dealer tech). Absorbs any oil or grease that might get left on tools. Cheap and easy to replace if needed.

That rolled stuff always ended up rolling up and bunching up with me opening and closing drawers. Also a lot of it is not oil resistant and will buck up if it gets very dirty.

I've used indoor/outdoor carpet for years. Inexpensive, easy to work with, lasts forever. Can't beat it.

I've read several reviews that say the rubberized open weave shelf liner can transfer black ooze to tools. Not a problem for raw metal or plated tools, but ugly on painted, rubber or wooden handle tools.

I recently bought some liner. Sears has some on sale for $15, down from $25 right now. Low-end yoga mats are a pretty good price, but I don't know about the longevity. The best deal seems to be HF solid (not mesh) liner on sale for $7.99 for a 18x72" roll, combined with a 25% off coupon.

I'll have to take a picture of the carpet I use. When some people say indoor/OUTDOOR carpet I think of that plasticky astro turf stuff. The stuff I use is indoor carpet but it's the super tight commercial stuff. What you would find in an office building or store
I noticed some of that outdoor carpet has a rubberized backing which seems like a good idea but I think it would curl on the ends after awhile where as if u have the normal nylon mesh backing that keeps it flattened out excellent

I lined my small tool box out with cardboard, my tools are often used in damp environments as i do farm work and cold stores etc. I give the card and tools a spray with wd40 or similar every now and then and the card acts like a sponge and keeps them mostly rust free.

samg430, how do you like this liner material? I have seen that brand on eBay but have been hesitant to purchase since it seems a bit thin. Could you post a pic or two?

I have the open weave stuff in a few drawers but find it "tattooing" its pattern on almost all of my tools. Easy enough to wipe off chrome, not so easy on most everything else.

i like it, i have another roll that i'm not going to use. if you want to see if you like it pay for shipping and it's yours. here is a couple of pics
