Depends on the tool. I'm using my Makita battery powered tools daily...
Drill: mostly for metal or wood, sometimes for concrete in hammer drill mode, sometimes mixing concrete or thinset.
Impact driver: My most useful tool. Disassembling electronics, assembling anything, lugnuts for tire rotations, auto repair.
Ratchet: Working on OPE in tight areas, but I usually just grab my 3/8 Snap On flex head.
Jig saw: Usually metal, sometime wood for small cuts.
Circular saw: Construction and framing. Cutting 2x4s and similar.
Recip saw: mostly for pruning.
Chainsaw: cutting firewood.
Inflator pump: Airing tires when I don't feel like running the air compressor.
Lawn mower: pretty obvious
String trimmer: pretty obvious
Work light: Auto repair
1/2 Impact: rusty bolts and lug nuts.
Orbital sander: furniture refinishing.
Leaf blower: fall leaves, summer grass clippings, winter snowblowing (the light fluffy stuff off of cars mostly).

  • Car repair/maintenance - I don't do everything but will do simple jobs like brake replacements, batteries, etc.
  • Woodworking - I've usually got at least one woodworking project in the works. Also use mechanic tools to fix the woodworking tools
  • House repair - whatever pops up. We hire very few things out, usually it comes down to time/expertise needed
  • Yard - do it all
I'll also help out my family with stuff if they need. Repaired my dad's snowblower around Thanksgiving and will help him if he needs a hand with this wood working tools.

I'll play:

Jack of all trades here, master of none. Basically just about every hobby or interest I have gained over my near 30 years of life involve tools in some way, shape, size or form (not gonna lie that's probably why I took an interest). Like you, I have an antique (1971) Sears Suburban 12hp mower (my avatar) with a deck, dozer blade and snowblower, and a couple of outboard motors that I admittedly haven't had much interest in working on lately, but I did amass a pretty full SAE kit for those and other types of projects.

I used to run a lawn/landscape company, did light home reno work, and maintained all my own equipment, using a mixture of SAE and metric tools there.

Basic maintenance on my car required the purchase of some specific tools (2015 VW Diesel SportWagen) to do some work there. I used to do more of my own maintenance on the car, but lately life just gets in the way so it's often easier to take it to someone for anything more than swapping winters and summers.

Boats - grew up around them and I love being on the water any chance I get. Learned all about engines and maintenance of wood on boats, lots of tool use as well.

More recently I've been more into woodworking, which requires a whole other set of tools, 3D printing (tools that require tools).

old jeeps and trucks are my thing. Mine are: 1946, 1956 and 2006 jeeps, and 1932 ford, 1933 chevy and 2000 ford trucks.

Are used to use my tools on this.

Now I work on light rail. Not the most exciting job, but it pays the bills.

I’m an aircraft mechanic by trade- but can’t use personal tools there. Shop tools only and heavily scrutinized. Transitioned over to more of the logistics side the past few years.

I’ve been stocking up the personal tools for years now. Oddly enough- now that I have about anything I could want tool wise, I now don’t have the time to use any of them for our project car(s).

But. By golly if I did have time- cars, motorcycles, etc. If it has a motor I’ll play with it. Really need to begin building a small ATV or dirtbike with my 5 year old daughter. But again- that time piece hasn’t been kind lately (for projects.. I’m always hanging with my little helper!)

Working on the house, garage, car & truck, mowers, snowblowers, tractor, other equipment. Doing side work for family, friends, and co-workers. Occasionally bring some of my tools to work but not very often since most of our stuff is supplied and if I break a personal tool they won't buy me a replacement.

Spent some time doing commercial HVAC, spent time working for the phone company, so I still have tools for those trades, but now I am retired, I mostly work on bicycles, restore old furniture, work on my 110 year old house, and play with a metal lathe, shaper and small mill.

I never liked working on my daily driver, and I got rid of my motorcycles years ago.
