Garage Cabinets and Storage

I've been here a couple of months. My thread "What's your workbench look like?" generated 19,850 views so far. Been reading about a cabinet and storage section and I think it's a great idea. Lots of people are talking about storage ideas and posting pictures. Don't mind people showing off there stuff either, that just gives me more ideas to borrow.
Anyway I'm going to start with a cabinet line from Edsal. They supply industrial customers, and compete with Lista and Stanley Vidmar

If you can see past all the ****, mine are genuine 1965 Hygena fitted kitchen units, these were actually the kitchen in the house when we bought it and one run fitted nicely across the back of my little single garage. I wish I'd kept more of the matching overhead cupboards with hindsight. They will not be moving with s to the next house/garage thats for sure! They're a bit knackered tbh but hey, they was free!

Like the cast iron base. My favorite garage was the one car we had in Napa, Ca. Did some stained glass projects on the side those days. Swinging garage door and a door to the back yard it collected the breeze and was the coolest spot on warm days.

After researching all the brands, i decided on Lista for my workbench/tool box. Here's a few shots...

Re: Garage Cabinets and Storage

There is a thread in the "Questions & Suggestions" forum suggesting a storage/cabinet forum; maybe if enough people suggest it, a section can be added. Anyway, this thread is a great idea. I'm planning on building more cabinets to add to my current homemade ones so this should provide some ideas. Below are some pictures of the ones I made. They're not great, but not too bad for my first woodworking project:

The cabinets are metal kitchen units from the '50s. Heavy duty and still good as new. The racks are from a local store that went out of business.

Pallet racking is a great way to go and used pallet racks are available in most areas. The main benefits are higher load capacities over longer spans than traditional metal shelves. Most industrial users want to fork lift pallets onto these rack so finding something used that will fit in a garage might be hard to do. Lowes is stocking a 2000 lb capacity 3 shelf unit for $170 that's a good deal for most residential garages.

I found a buntch of office metal cabinets. They are 36''W,18''D, 27''H. I made a french cleat with a sheet of 1/2'' plywood. I then installed a cleat behind the cabinet and added a piece of plywood inside the cabinet to spread the load. I think I was alittle overkill on install, but I think its worth it. The cabinets were a great deal.

Great cabinets.
What's a French cleat?

What's a French cleat?

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words so take a look at the link below:
http://www.hooksandlattice.com/cleat-hangers.html

Basically it's a board (or steel) you put on the back of the cabinets so that you can hang them easier (sometimes even by yourself).

You can make your own out of wood. Set a table saw at 45 degree (or the angle of your choice) and slide a piece of 1X4 through. Cut to the length of the cabinet set and use screws at each stud (make sure it is level)(You will probably want a set high and low on the cabinets). Then go to the cabinets and put the matching piece on it. Now all you have to do is pick up the cabinets and hang them on the wall. Additional screws are always a good idea.

That's pretty cool. When I put up cabinets, I put a bottom ledger board and rest the cabinets on that then screw the tops in place. I'm looking forward to trying this out.

I'm a sucker for these threads, I know.

All the ones above the aluminum belt-line stripe are home-made. The one to the right of the front table is also home-made; it's got a double-jointed way of opening so that I can keep the table close by but still slide in a stepladder and a broom.

A couple of Vidmars in the middle:

Everything above the sink and below the sink -- as well as the countertop itself -- were cut out of a single Strong Hold cabinet.

The one in the middle is a Lyon. The one holding up the steel plate and the chubby vise is a Strong Hold:

A couple more Strong Holds in the back:

I made this one just high enough so that I could stand under it when I was walking around the car. Then I tiled the floor, and discovered I'd become a half inch taller. :)

Dude, I freak'n love your garage. The funny thing is, it's totally not even my style and I wouldn't have it for myself, but it is sooooo well put together I have to praise it! I'm envious....

Re: Garage Cabinets and Storage

The artsy fartsy side of my brain has been cruising the internet for industrial designed antiques. Seems to be quite a few designers using old shop cabinets in there work. Most are stripped bare and use recycled lumber for tops and shelves. Went to the local used office salvage store and found old school lockers for 125 bucks per door. That's about the same as new retail. Check out new lockers here.

Re: Garage Cabinets and Storage

Found this rounded corner tool cabinet at an on line antique store.
View media item 10630I'm trying to keep this string current. A lot of people are posting questions and photos of their great storage cabinets. This was meant to be a place you could put your posts and keep up on the first page of threads. To inspire those remodeling or reorganize what they have. So if it looks like I'm the only one adding to this thread I'm sorry. Yep I sell this kind of stuff on line, but this is a place for you to add to till a separate category for Storage and Cabinets is added. Thanks

View media item 10373Here's my wall cabinets. Cheap 3 door Home Depot cabinets. 50 bucks per section. They work great as general catch alls but aren't too deep 12". The wife mainly uses them. I'm hoping people will post there storage cabinets photos here to spark some ideas for my garage. Right now there are great ideas all over the site but finding them takes more time than I have. If you have posted your pictures before post them again here. If we can keep this thread close to the top of the first page, it will make finding and stealing (I mean borrowing) your ideas easier.

Made them myself. No doors yet. Shelves are 20" depth, cabinet is 24" depth. Reason is that the doors themselves will have hooks and bins for the loose small **** that you can't deal with locating in the shelves. Plus the cabinets are not flush to the wall. This gives me out of sight storage for sheet goods behind the cabinets. (3) 2x3 on top give me another shelf behind for pipe goods. You can see in pic 2.

Still a long way from finishing this reno, but I am doing the best I can. I still have an entire wall to finish with the shells before I can order the finished Vaneer/MDF. Then I will feel this project finally ending.

Great garage. Is your floor tiled? How do you like the slat wall?

Yup, Porcelain Grade 4 and 5 tile. Best damn floor in the world, at least as far as I am concerned.

Slat wall is absolutely the next best thing since sliced bread. I have it going all around the garage. I hung up everything on it so far. I have garbage bag spools, car ramps, shelves, cord hangers, rope hangers, everything else that can be hung or put between two hooks. And since I am not done organizing, I need to move **** around. I love that I can just grab two hooks and move it over.

You can see the reno in this thread. The garage started looking like ****. It is really a shocker how far I came along.

New Here:

This particular thread is interesting to me so I thought I would bump it and see if someone has more picks...

Question: How do you make a large shelf with a 45 degree angle arm which is properly supported on the studs on a garage wall that has drywall? I made a shelf out of 2" x 4" and 3/4 " plywood which crashed down after hanging for 1 hour.

Thanks.
