What drill do I need?

So I use the M18 drill and impact driver pretty much every day. I also have a cheap HF (11 bucks with coupon!) drill I use when I don't have enough batteries.

But once in a while I get a job that requires more. Last month I had to drill some concrete for rebar. Impossible with a regular drill.

This week I was supposed to drill some holes in some concrete fountains to keep water out of them. I can drill cinder blocks easily, so I thought this would be doable. NOPE! Impossible with my drills.

And next week I need to drill a bunch of holes in some brick to hold anchors.

So obviously I need some sort of hammer drill, right?

I know I want corded and not cordless, so keep that in mind.

On rare occasions I think I'd actually like the functionality of a rotary hammer. Mainly for light chipping and scraping. Is it worth it to spring for a rotary hammer instead of a hammer drill in my case?

Keep in mind that I can't spend much. I got a lot of mouths to feed here. :)

I have a tool guy that can get me either one of these, brand new, for a hundred bucks cash:

So rotary hammer or hammer drill?

I'm open to other brands and ideas and info though!

Thanks!

Those are both rotary hammers. The D style one is rather powerful for it's style, where as the other, more traditional rotary hammer drop motor style is a bit anemic in comparison. If you can get them for $100 each brand new, buy both. :lol_hitti Otherwise the D style gets my vote as it will function as a chipping hammer where as that drop style won't do chipping only.

Drop style won't do chipping? Oh, I didn't know that! I'm not sure what you mean by "D style" or "Drop style." Which is which?

How many amps do you think I need to have, minimum, so it's not anemic?

Oh, and also, what size chuck should I try to focus on? I see TONS of them from really small to mega huge! I want to get something that takes pretty common bits/tools that won't break the bank and can be found everywhere.

They both have the same chuck style, it's called an SDS plus shanked bit. You can get adapters to use a standard 3 jaw drill chuck like your other drills, but these are not designed for that from the get go. I'd suggest you read the specs of each one. If user comfort and speed on smaller holes are your goal then the drop motor style are going to be what you want, but again with that particular model you selected (526321) it will not do chipping only. Thus you will get more versatility out of the D handle (long slender, 526221) unit.

I'll just add this, if you plan on doing a good amount of chipping, get a chipping specific hammer. Trying to chip out a large area with a smaller 3 position unit is like cleaning a large statue with a tooth brush.

keep in mind, the length of the drill, with the bit and /or an extra keyed chuck installed.
it may get too long to get into some areas.

Try a knockoff first, go to HF. My 28 have small hammer drill and I have a Hilti but there are in between. They make a real one in 28V, probably 18 too but a lot of this depends on the scale of the job.

I thought about a knock-off since I rarely use them. But for a hundred bucks....

Nah, not stolen. There's several guys around DFW who, apparently, buy tools by the pallet. Some new. Some refurbs. Some garbage. But they sell them cheap!

I got my M18 combo for $100 from him, brand new. I get the redlithium batts for like $20-$25. Lots of good deals!

I got a new DeWalt grinder for 40 bucks from another one of these guys last night, in fact!

Bosch would be nice!

I'm sure the tools aren't stolen. I suspect they are buying pallets of customer returns.

I borrowed a neighbors almost new 20V DeWalt hammer drill for just 2 hole yo hang a mailbox on brick. Went through like a hot knife through butter.

If you already own batteries, don't dismiss a cordless hammer drill unless you have a large number of holes to drill.

Don't forget to scratch off the serial numbers once you get it (if it's not already done for you). I would certainly go for the more expensive of the 2 and maybe buy a few to resell and recoup your cost. :rocker:

I don't think I could resell any. There's at least half a dozen guys in the DFW area who do this same thing at these prices.

Do you guys in other cities really not have this same sort of deal? I figured they were in every city!

I picked mine up with an assortment of bits used on Ebay for around $75.

It took me a few auctions but I finally got one cheap enough to justify the cost. Only 1 of the bits was used and it still looked pretty good so I dont think it had much use.

These thing punches through concrete block like hot wire through stryofoam. Real concrete is like going through a hard wood with a HF drill. Larger bits take a little more patience but not much. Worth the investment if you find yourself drill holes occasionally

Sure we do. Every major city has a fence of some sort. :willy_nil

Just giving you some **** on that one^^^

Who knows if they are warm or not? You could always ask but I already know the answer you'll likely get. They will either tell you straight up that it's legit whether it is or not and/or they will never do a deal with you again for asking.

It may be that they are customer returns or that they are selling off a bunch from a slickdeal type grab????

I see the CL posts here in Dallas for what Fugio is talking about. $1000 for a pallet of returned HD tools. Probably doesn't take too many sales @ $100 to pay off.

That being said, if you're in DFW, might want to take a ride down to the Milwaukee service center by Love Field. They oftentimes have refurbs for sale for better deals than the online places.
