I like the size of the new garage, too bad you couldn't paint it before moving all of your stuff in. I've learned I hate to paint after everything is in the way.

Oh yes. Tried real hard to convince the builder to finish the garage for me, but they would not budge. Pulte- love the house and the build process has been great, but basically if it's not on the list of options, it's not happening, especially if it is visible to the other owners.m Idid get a service door roughed in, which caused a bit of a stink.

Closed on a Friday, had to be out of the rental Saturday and empty two storage lockers by the next Thursday to avoid another months rent. Impossible for me to do it before we moved in, So likely, it will never get painted. Bummer.

Finally got some lighting in. Costco LEDs, and I changed the other cfls to 100 watt equivalent led bulbs. I will eventually wire the Costco LEDs to the garage door opener outlet and use a pull chain as they are much brighter than I need/want most of the time.

In this picture you can see some planning, blue tape is the outline of my service door Rough in, and the outlet in the upper corner is for the future has heater.

In the next year, I will have the door in, and a small deck off the back to store the garbage cans. Hoa says they need to be hidden from street view, which is fine with me but I hate having them in the garage.

View out back where the future shed and garbage can deck will go. (More planning ahead). Almost pulling the trigger on a craigslist shed 8x11 that will fit in the space created by the retaining wall. That area is 10' x12', so my width is limited, though I could go a bit longer.

I'm going to love having the shed close to the garage. last place had it 100' away up a steep hill. This will be much better.

Well since it hasn't snowed at all, I've put aside my boot dryer project for a later date. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=312124

Decided to get the bikes hung higher. Current setup has two drawbacks. 1- too high to easily get them on the hooks, too low to walk under. Cannot open the truck hood or liftgate with the bikes in the way.

Neighbor has two of those cheapo pulley hoist systems that he gave me for some beers.

1st reaction- these things are ****. Cheaply made, poor quality stuff- however it is actually adequate for the job. Inexpensive is the key- I could have made my own at 50x the price. (I checked)

Ropes, lock mechanism and pulleys are cheap, but do the trick. What was the big downfall is the hooks to attach to the bike.

I have several thousand dollars worth of bikes hanging over my (hopefully) more valuable head- I don't want them falling. Plus, my kids are not going to be careful using these- so something better must be done.

Ended up scrapping the hooks, adding eyebolts and squeezing the frames in to help prevent the ropes falling off to the side.

Cheapo carabiners fromAmazon and a bit of paracord, and some nylon rope once I ran out of paracord-

Finished product.

Can open the liftgate, hood and walk around my truck without ducking. They are very easy to use, and now with the new hooks, safe.


Of course I have enough bikes up there to block out the sun, I need to work on some additional lighting.

To test the paracord and Chinese (probably) carabiners, I hooked it to my garage door tracks and hung off it. The biner did bend a bit, but I weigh 190 ish, and my bikes are all >30 lbs. The paracord is rated for 550lbs, so I think it will do fine.

Glad I found your thread. Storing my slowly growing collection while having the garage still be a parking area for two vehicles in the winter is the reason I joined and started perusing GJ.

Wow - I just stumbled upon this thread. Great looking space!

Kind of wish I would have seen some of the ideas a little sooner.

3 kids was a big part of it. If I were to spend a time hours away from them doing something only for me...
Also helps to focus money to a single time consuming and costlyhobby.

I fixed that for you. At least, thats why I have intentionally avoided golf, collector/project cars, hunting and anything else that pops up on the radar.

As much as I love bikes, they are a PITA to store. It only works for me to go up, bit the kids bikes stay on the floor and are always in the way.

Have you tried "hanging" the kids' bikes at the kids' level(s)? Mine aren't old enough to ride alone yet, but the oldest knows that her balance bike must be put away before anything else gets pulled off the shelf. (Santa brought a pedal bike this year and we'll keep that rule in place).

This is much quieter than the modine I had at my old place.

Installed just in time for a warming trend to come to my area.
