Well, I tell you what I did in the past few weeks. I have the older Craftsman (80s), as well as some MAC, Snap-on, etc., from when I was was a mechanic years ago. I wanted some singles to complete some sets that were missing sockets over the years. Just couldn't pay $3 for a single socket and haven't had much time for yard sales, so I did this:
- Husky 95 piece set that was on sale at HD for $49. It was $79 regularly. That set goes in the truck and I added some Husky pliers, etc. I didn't do that, because I think they are junk. Quite the opposite. Rusted yard sale tools aren't what I want to reach for a 3AM on the side of the turnpike, in the pouring rain. I want something decent that will get me home and I believe the Husky will do that. As noted above, it didn't have too much junk that I didn't need.
- I filled some gaps with others sockets i had to complete the older Craftsman set I've had. Found a used, empty, Craftsman 122 piece socket/tool set case from way back, and loaded it with my old Craftsman sockets, wrenches, and there was space for pliers, needle nose, flashlight, etc. I'd love to get a hold of another of those empty cases. Anyway, that set is for around the house, going to the kid's house, etc.
- Then I bought the GW sets on Amazon. I bought the 3/8 and 1/4 sets, with 120p ratchets. I think they were $99 and $69 respectively. 10 minutes ago, I just loaded those into my garage toolbox, on to socket trays, etc., and they will be my garage set.
- I also bought the GW four ratchet, flexhead set on Amazon. The 120P four set was on sale for $108 when I grabbed it last week, but it's back to $127.
