All I have socket wise is what most people here would call a trunk set. one of those "225" piece sets that has an odd mix of sizes and types of sockets plus bits/L-keys/other stuff. I am thinking of getting something like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-1...-Drive-Socket-Set-200-Piece-H200MSS/207186810 since it is ONLY sockets( I don't really want more husky wrenches so I will be buying some gear wrench 120 xp's as I have heard good things) this seems like a MUCH more comprehensive set than say a 2-300 piece "mechanic's" set, and since I have pretty much all of the other tools you would find in those sets this seems like a better buy, but I am just curious if ya'll think $1/socket for import sockets is decent?

Some would say spending less than 20 per socket on a 12 piece set is unbecoming

I needed to buy an “away” tool set recently to help a buddy build a factory 5 car. For sockets I went with 3/8” and 1/4” Gearwrench sets with the 120XP ratchets for $110. I haven’t purchased 1/2” sockets yet, I’ve just been using my old HF deep impacts for 1/2” duty. I’ve been looking at the Tekton 84 piece 1/2” set for $200, I like that there are no skips, but for anything over 3/4” or 19mm I can generally use my impact sets.

Here is a link, the page says $119, but if you enter your email to get a quote it’s $90 plus probably $20 for shipping.

The Husky set is a fairly complete set with a surprising number of bigger 1/2 sizes that you don’t typically see in box store sets. Not a bad buy since it has good range and fills a need for you.

You can't really go much cheaper than a buck a socket unless it a sale deal .
Do believe 1 GJ member had that set for 99 bucks
Those husky not worst sockets and certainly up to diy use and more probably .
I like the oem socket on rail sets, gearwrench on 1/2 price or 1 free sale not bad sockets either
Out of ratchets I think the gw 84T a better usable ratchet over 120xp.
Some of the carlyle ratchets pretty nice when on real deal sale price .

$1-$2 per socket if you are buying a set of on sale Made in China sockets from a big box store or Harbor Freight. Try to avoid the big sets because they like to stuff a lot of useless stuff like allen keys and screwdriver bits and count them as pieces.

Well, I tell you what I did in the past few weeks. I have the older Craftsman (80s), as well as some MAC, Snap-on, etc., from when I was was a mechanic years ago. I wanted some singles to complete some sets that were missing sockets over the years. Just couldn't pay $3 for a single socket and haven't had much time for yard sales, so I did this:

- Husky 95 piece set that was on sale at HD for $49. It was $79 regularly. That set goes in the truck and I added some Husky pliers, etc. I didn't do that, because I think they are junk. Quite the opposite. Rusted yard sale tools aren't what I want to reach for a 3AM on the side of the turnpike, in the pouring rain. I want something decent that will get me home and I believe the Husky will do that. As noted above, it didn't have too much junk that I didn't need.

- I filled some gaps with others sockets i had to complete the older Craftsman set I've had. Found a used, empty, Craftsman 122 piece socket/tool set case from way back, and loaded it with my old Craftsman sockets, wrenches, and there was space for pliers, needle nose, flashlight, etc. I'd love to get a hold of another of those empty cases. Anyway, that set is for around the house, going to the kid's house, etc.

- Then I bought the GW sets on Amazon. I bought the 3/8 and 1/4 sets, with 120p ratchets. I think they were $99 and $69 respectively. 10 minutes ago, I just loaded those into my garage toolbox, on to socket trays, etc., and they will be my garage set.

- I also bought the GW four ratchet, flexhead set on Amazon. The 120P four set was on sale for $108 when I grabbed it last week, but it's back to $127.
