When I was growing up I had to borrow tools because I didn't have any of my own and I gave some tools back dirty and I got my *** ripped so I learned to polish up the tools before I put them away or gave them back that has been 33 years ago.

"What is a tool polisher?"

Someone who may own more tools than they need, and takes exceptional care of them.

I could be considered a very light tool polisher...being that I use my tools hard but never put them away wet. There are no comfort grips with oil on them, I clean the inside of my sockets, wipe down every tool I use with LAs Totally Awesome Cleaner etc.

Some friends think I'm wasting my time doing that but it makes me feel better
You are OK. You clean them AFTER USING them. Tool polishers don't acually use them; they admire them. But watch out for that cleaning stuff you are using. It is a gateway drug. LOL

The guy with the SO box and full range of tools who pontificates about how you should lose your man card for not changing your own oil but can't do anything more involved. Bonus points for saying "It gives me a chance to look things over and catch a problem before it starts." knowing damn well he doesn't know what he is looking for or what to do if he finds it.

A guy with a $10K tool set and 10 cent skill set.

At work, we use the term for sandbaggers who draw out jobs with meaningless tasks so that they are "busy" when the next job comes up.

Any one that asks about the finish of a tool, before buying it. Come on its a tool not jewelery.
Guilty. I am paying for the priveldge of f***ing it up myself. Sick, I know.

I'm pretty sure there is not a single tool in my box that I haven't tried to use as a hammer.
Please go to related tool abuser thread. Destructive tendancies and OCD are different diseases. LOL. Isn't this fun?

This was supposed to be just for fun. It is amazing fast it always gets personel. It sounds like jr highschool. "You're one". "No. You're one". I also see nothing wrong with posting often to BS with others of similar interests. Unfortunately there are those that can't have a discussion without taking an alternative viewpoint as a personal attack. I don't always succeed but I try not to get sucked in.

as i've said before in in the tool abuser club.

ive got to say i have "destructive tendencies" as well...

from the time i started working in '76, i was always told "sacrifice the tool for the job" that has never changed.
even with all the abuse my working tools have taken over the years, i've broken very few, and warrantied even fewer.

What I've always thought of when the term "tool polisher" is thrown around on this site (never heard it before GJ) is someone who owns the latest and greatest but never actually does any work with them. Not a "collector" per say because they (polisher )want to own the tool to impress real tool guys. The guy who is obsessive about cleanliness and storage may very well have the knowledge to put the tools to work.

As I've said many times I don't understand folks who get upset about the tools in somebody else's box. If one guy wants Snap-On and one wants Craftsman and a third wants HF who cares?

If this was the entire definition of "Tool Polisher" than count me as a proud member of the club.

I have a lot of tools that I use and some that I have never used that make up a set. So why did I buy sets? Because sometimes a bolt is worn or maybe just made a little off and the metric wrench that I never used will fit good on a SAE bolt. I do not have the time to screw around because I am short a tool.

In all fairness, OP is generally referring to how people act with one another on this forum.

So when will the companion thread go up? The thread for people who have no real life, so they come to GJ to subject us to the way, the truth, and the light aka their own loudmouthed opinion on everything? Those types are more irritating than tool polishers in my opinion.

Quick side note - I've read every post on this thread, waiting for certain people to chime in, but they haven't. I guess we/they know their place. I just think that's funny.

I wear Gorilla Grip style gloves when I do jobs and when I finish, if not soaked in oil, I just grip the tool and pull it through like cleaning the blade of a knife. That's about the extent of it. FYI, the gloves are about $1 a pair and the same as Gorilla Grips. http://m.ebay.com/itm/POLYURETHANE-...%3Aa8ab5a181590a2a202b8ec32ffbee5b7%7Ciid%3A3

I guess it's safe to announce a new invention I'm going to market since the patent is applied for now. You've all seen retractable dog leashes and key chains, well my invention is the size of a stop watch that you wear on your wrists. The end has a small thick elastic band that you slip over the ratchet handle or wrench when you 1st grab it. The little chain retracts itself all the time to stay out of the way but if you ever drop the tool it won't hit the floor since it's tethered to your wrist on a 16" chain.

Google "tool leash," there's a few hundred varieties and are commonly required of techs working at height bc dropped tools are a serious hazard to others. On the ground nobody uses them bc theyre a safety hazard to oneself.

You are OK. You clean them AFTER USING them. Tool polishers don't acually use them; they admire them.

Agreed, there's the important distinction to make.

Why don't you make a list then, and post it here, of those who you deem fall within your definition?

You know, I'm not really sure what you're aiming for here. Do you keep a list of people who don't measure up to your tool using/owning standards? And for those who don't meet your ideals in terms of tool use/ownership, where's "their place?" Where are you going with this? What's your point?

LOL, exactly...

I find the amount of judgement, envy, and intolerance of the OP and some of the follow up posts astounding.

No no, that's not my intentions. This entire thread from the beginning was meant to be for fun. Everyone has their own definition of a "tool polisher" as we've seen. If I wanted to "call" people out, I would have done so from the beginning. Again that's not my intentions. I saw the comment being used in another post yesterday and asked in that thread if I was considered a tool polisher. The others in that thread that used that term had not posted here. Relax everybody... Its all for fun.

If I did have to start a list though, in no particular order..

Damm, I guess I won't be moving to the Caribbean

Come to think of it I've seen them used by nasa when repairing the Hubble in space too.

Hey gdoc, is this the post from "Let's see your toolbox?" (you don't need to open the link, I copied it right under the link)

Most people in the world would be like WTF? if you called them that, but on here it's the most offensive, degrading name known to man. Now let me ask you, I work in maintenance at a hospital. A big hospital. I use tools every single day. From giant adjustables and pipe wrenches to small precision screwdrivers. I beat the **** out of them because I didn't pay for them, but at home, where my personal tools are used, I take care of them better. Does this make me a tool polisher? When I say take care of them better, I mean I'm using a ratchet as a hammer at work, but a ratchet as a ratchet and a hammer as a hammer at home type stuff. I also wipe my stuff down when I'm finished and keep everything neat and organized, ya know, because I paid a lot of money for them. The stuff at work goes right back in the tool bag or box. Part time tool polisher maybe?

Maybe the title of this thread should have been "Tool Polishers - Ban or Tolerate?"

There are definitely varying levels of tool aficionados on this forum. Some have a greater fondness for the tools themselves over the tool's ability to preform a task. At some point these tool aficionados are singled out and labeled as Tool Polishers. Is this a new hate group like we've seen though out the ages? Akin to being a Jew in the 1930's and 40's or queers or (sorry, better not use the "N" word in these sensitive times).

Well, the title of this thread is "What is a tool polisher?!" and someone in the middle of the thread likened the deciding factor to be a rung somewhere in the middle of a stairway to the clouds. I think they hit it spot on. All of us fall on one of those rungs. There's over 275,000 members here so lets say there are 275,000 rungs. The guy on one side of you is less a tool polisher but the guy on your other side is more of one. Since you're sitting side by side here why not focus on those further down and what say we make rung 200 the cut off point. Hell Ya! Anyone below rung 200 is a friggin JEW! or even worse, a jew lover for aiding and abetting!

gdoc I see you've edited your 1st post to include a quote from a member who cited something like the real problem is when someone below rung 200 lectures a 10 or 15 year experienced mechanic on how to properly use a tool. That's a good one and I agree they should be called out for that but not crucified. Just have it explained that "this is the real world way the tool is used by real mechanics in the field". The guy shouldn't be lecturing either, it's a public forum where we discuss and learn so he should have merely suggested his opinion.

I confess I love old tools that are functional but also have some artistic design flare like the plumb pebble grain or the swirly thick castings on early machinery that has been replaced by squarish mundane castings designed to use as little metal as possible to save production costs. When I see the restoration and fabrication work guys are doing here that goes beyond just functional I'm really impressed and can understand why people become tool polishers.

I guess it's a real skill to determine how much work someone does over the internet...maybe only guys who "really" use their tools know how to do this...

Just having a quick glance here I would say Wagoner72 is a polisher and I would like to ask him how much he owes on the tools/boxes as if he is really only 21(unless he still lives at home or someone buys his tools for him) he would have struggled to have made enough money in his life to pay for a collection like that, but it is a very nice collectiob even if I can only see a couple of tools that look like they have been used.

I guess i'd consider myself a tool polisher. Been using my dads garage to do most of my work. Now that I've finally moved to a place with a garage I can finally build my tool box. Have only used a few screw drivers and a couple wrenches so far but if I find a good deal on some tools that I know I've used at my dads I snag it up for when I get a house with a garage I can actually work in. Planning for the future, as I know I will use them more in the future than I do right now.

Who cares? No one is better than anyone else. GJ is starting to be nothing but everyone taking shots at some one else. Guys that buy nothing but HF brag about how they don't have truck payment. Guys that buy that truck brands talk **** on the guys that buy all HF. Some guys want to collect stuff. Other guys think it's stupid to collect stuff. Who cares? Quit you're complaining and move on. I'm sure people think I'm a "tool polisher" and all my stuff looks new. But all my stuff is new. It's all been bought with in the past 5 years. My tools don't get used every single day but they're used often. I don't use every single tool every week either. I work on a fairly broad amount of things. So I have a broad selection of tools. The stuff I have still looks good because I don't abuse the **** out of it. I buy the certain brands of certain things I'm required to have and that's just how it is. Sure I owe a couple hundred bucks to a tool truck. I don't care. I owe money for a hospital bill too. Someone going to call me out on that cuz they pay their hospital bills up front? Who cares? So if someone buys some tools they don't necessarily use all the time what does it matter? Majority of members on here are American so everyone probably buys an abundance of something that they really don't need. So quit your bitching. You're just as bad as that guy who may have bought an expensive ratchet that he doesn't need cuz he has 25 other ones just like it.
