Re: what is consider a garage???

Even though we all know that size does matter,:D judging the worth of a garage on size alone is discriminatory and elitist. Many of us either cannot afford or are not allowed (by zoning etc.) to have the garage we really want and make do with what we have.
Much more important is how the garage is used. A small garage, used efficiently and regularly is much more a "garage" than a 3000 sq.ft. warehouse that is mostly empty or containing ego toys IMHO.

Re: what is consider a garage???

I agree with the first two responses. Sure, having a mega-sized garage is nice but don't discount smaller spaces like Jack Olsen's 12-gauge garage. He's got more going on in there than many 1000+ sf garages.

However, to answer your question, governing bodies have set minimum depths for garages and other entities like FHA have specified minimum door widths (15') to be considered a two-car garage.

Re: what is consider a garage???

You need to define what you mean by a garage. Is it a place to store cars and **** usually attached to the house, or are you defining it as a place to take your rig to get it repaired?

1. garage - an outbuilding (or part of a building) for housing automobiles
car port, carport - garage for one or two cars consisting of a flat roof supported on poles
outbuilding - a building that is subordinate to and separate from a main building
2. garage - a repair shop where cars and trucks are serviced and repaired

Is that some kind of gratuitous post? What do you have?

I've got a 20W x 18L and it'll have to do on my 7000 foot lot. At least I'm not working in a hut with a dirt floor.

Re: what is consider a garage???

I'm guessing the OP wasn't intended to be as dicky as it sounded....

Anyhow, I think if it isn't used to park daily drivers and store lawn equipment, 1000 sq ft is a pretty nice size space to work on a project vehicle with room for everything you should need. Tell Jack Olsen he doesn't have a real garage.

And just WTF is this all about--------> :rocker:

I'm not sure what you meant by your post but I'm assuming that you have some huge garage and just wanted to brag about it and put others down for only having a "closet"? That's cool I'll go back to my "closet" and get some work done, enjoy your real garage. Good thing life isn't measured by the size of your garage or "closet".

I agree. A garage needs to be large enough to fit one car in it, and have a door big enough to get that car in and out.

Agreed. The definition of a garage becomes important when the national fire code NFPA prohibits solid fuel heaters in a "garage".

At my house the "garage" is where my wife and daughter park their cars everyday...the shop is where my son and I put ours when we need to work on them. When the shop is empty, all sorts of crazy projects take place that I would never think of doing in the garage.....but that's just how we do things. Were all different, thank God!

I think this one is an honest attempt to describe the subject.

I went to Wikipedia and it wasn't much help (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garage).

I somewhat agree with what is above but I have lived in several houses with "garages" that are WAY too short for "NORMAL" cars. How about....

Garage:
1. An attached (or sometimes unattached) area that is usually unheated and uncooled originally designed to store a motor vehicle in a semi-secured manner. Normally these structures have three walls and a door large enough to allow a motor vehicle to enter and exit under it's own power.

Car port (also Carport)
1. An attached (or unattached) area that is normally unheated and uncooled originally designed to protect the top of the car from the element. Normally these structures have two or more sides open to the elements but can have significant storage.

Very similar to the original post but there are MANY carports in this area that do not have flat roofs. Most of them are open to the elements on more than two sides.

Shop:
1. A structure that is used to store tools and materials to repair or build something.

Any of the above structures can be very small or very large. I've worked out of my vehicle (and it was called a "shop") to a 10,000 square foot warehouse. I considered all of them "shops" and the ones that I could lock up and feel confident that they were semi-secure were considered "garages".

Some of the coolest spaces on this forum are the tiny ones in aus. and europe. Old buildings that have history and character that my 40x50 never will.
We on this forum try to show respect to our members and their spaces .We know how much it means , whatever the size.

If need to clarify what a 'garage' is (legally) (for building purposes?), you should probably have the people who have the power clarify it for you. A 'garage' might mean one thing to you or me, but something else to those building code guys and gals.......

From Dictionary.com

Ga·rage   [guh-rahzh, -rahj or, especially Brit., gar-ij, -ahzh] Show IPA noun, verb, ga·raged, ga·rag·ing.
noun
1. a building or indoor area for parking or storing motor vehicles.
2. a commercial establishment for repairing and servicing motor vehicles.

To me a garage is anything that can store a car. If you spend significant time (4-6 hours a week) working in it, it is a shop.

To paraphrase George Carlin, a garage is a place to put your stuff while you go out and get more stuff.

My first garage was litterally about 12X20 so 240 sq. ft. It had a dirt floor, one light bulb, and two electric outlets. I thought I was in the big house when I built it. I made enough money painting cars/trucks in that little 'closet' to build my 30X50 garage and it isn't big enough.

You can fill up any amount of garage space with all kinds of junk. What matters is that you have enough free space to work on whatever projects you may have, and leave a parking space for your understanding wife to park her car in the winter.

Perhaps it should be noted the OP lives in NC.

People living in Manhattan or Chicago would likely have a different perspective.

Any Garage is better then none, especially when you have to fix a vehicle in winter let alone outside.

People that don't like to clean snow off their cars for $800 Alex.

That's funny.

I'll readily admit that my mini two-car garage here in SoCal does feel quite a bit like a closet when we have both cars inside. These tract houses aren't that generous with garage dimensions and the builder likes to cram in furnace/blower/WH as well. That said, our last place only had a single carport so this is quite a step up for us!

The garage, to me, is a multi-functional space that handles many roles: car park (2); garden shed; bike/gear storage; workshop; gym(heavy bag); and finally "Garage" for auto repair/mods. Could we use more space? Absolutely. The garage could then handle more simultaneous roles without so much juggling based on priority.

(As folks may have guessed, a tight HOA and crazy-small lot prevent us from adding additional space to spread these roles. Yea, I know, HOAs are evil. That said, unlike rural PA where I grew up, finding a balance between price/size/commute/safety here in SoCal leads to tough choices)

So to those with more space, I do envy the potential you have. To those with less, I've been there and understand how complex it can be to optimize. 200 or 2000sqft, make the most of your garage (or Garage ;)). Either way, the tips and tricks here on GJ can really help.

A garage is any enclosed space where you store one or more vehicles. A shop is any enclosed structure where you keep your tools and perform tasks to build or repair items. If you have only one space you use for both purposes, you get to pick whether it is your garage or your shop. In any case, the more space you have the more you can store and the more you can do - until the items stored encroah on the work space...

What's a "garage"? I have a work shop....:) That's all that matters to me. It's small and still a work in progress but it gets the jobs done.
