What is Fair Price for this Toolbox?

Hi guys,

I need to sell this toolbox, as part of an estate sale. But before I do, I was wondering if anyone could tell me a fair price of what it's worth. It's a 20 drawer Macsimizer (8'x4') in great condition. Also, around what year(s) was this box sold, and what was the retail price?

I'm not real sure of the age of that box. My guess would be about 10-15 years old, but that's a guess. As far as price goes, a lot will depend on the condition of the box, inside and out. Your location can also play a big role in the value of the box, and also how you plan to sell it, Craigslist, Ebay, or local paper.

Ebay is a good place to get an idea of its value and its age, too.

The box is in great shape, no dents, scratches, rust etc. The mechanic took very good care of it. I'm north of Chicago if that makes any difference.

I've been searching for info, but haven't found anything concrete. I've seen similar boxes (Macsimizer 20 drawer) selling for 4-6K. I thought I saw one somewhere with a retail price of $12K, but I can't find it anymore.

I do have a guy offering 2K, telling me they sold for 6K new, but I don't believe him. I want to find out for sure.

Selling at an estate sale is much different than selling on ebay or even craigslist where you are willing to wait, weeks, months or for some years.

Where? Are you sure they are selling for that? Asking is different than actually selling. Given the location and sale type, I think I'd take the $2K that is in front of you.

In my area there are several similar boxes, much newer, for asking $2500

While the color might be nice to someone, it usually affects the sales price in a negative way if it isn't a "popular" color (like black or red).

The only real comparable is the yellow one that sold for $2600. Hard to tell from pics but looks a little cleaner than the blue one that is being inquired about.

Few things: First I read somewhere (don't know where) that these boxes sold for 12K NEW, not a used box. Second, it's not exactly an estate sale, we inherited it, so I could sit on it for awhile. Lastly here are some links for other boxes:

It's worth more than 2500 bucks then. I would ask 3 and go from there. Those boxes were not cheap off the truck.

Nitro: you are talking to a group of guys that might own several toolboxes already and would only buy one if it was a great deal. if you are near Rockford i heard that area is coming back slowly, but was hit pretty hard by the economy dip the last 10 years.

if it was your Dad's or Grand dad's or a close relative's box do you already have one better or why aren't you keeping it? i like the looks of it, but as said you have a lot of guys that won't buy off on that color.

if you have a good high rating as an Ebay seller you might get a local buyer to pay you more than $2,000 for the box and pick it up, but you will have EBay's fees and maybe Paypal to consider right off the top.

There was one like that in my area that sat on Craigslist for at least over a year. It was listed at $2.5k. I doubt he actually got 2k for it since it's not a Snap-on.

Id take the 2k and call it a day.

FYI, the box was my wife's stepdad's. I'd keep it, but I don't have the room for it. Also, when I say North of Chicago, I mean a North suburb (20 miles).

Sure wish I lived where all these guys posting do...SO, Matco, MAC large boxes are NEVER listed for anything like what these guys say on price. Been trying to buy a 72" for over a year, and all I find is the guys that paid 6K + interest and think a 3 year old used box is worth 5K+. I don't even bother calling on them anymore, I already know all the profanity I need (they frequently offer a lot up when you try to make a real-world offer)

Looks like it'll be a strictlytoolboxes mission after vacation.

To the OP....wish I were close enough to make the pickup, that's a nice box and who really gives a rat's **** about color when you can buy a quality box at a GOOD price. But then, I work out of mine, it's not decorative.

Lord: Nitro could ship it to me for about $300-500 i'm guessing through Fastenal and then you need to make the trip down across the border to pick it up because Fastenal doesn't deliver to Canada yet. if Nitro can put it on a pallet and deliver it to a Fastenal store with a forklift or the regional warehouse i can pick it up for you.

just a thought and i live near Seatac airport. or pay me a $100 for gas and time and i'll drive it to the Anacortes ferry dock so you can take a ferry and walk it on and off once they have 2 boats per day which i think they do now. wouldn't that be a great site and wondering if you'd have to buy a ticket for the box.

When you want to know what an item is SELLING for on ebay, always check the SOLD listings to see what they sold for, not what someone is asking.

Call your local MAC guy. He might buy it or have an idea of someone who will AND he will know the value.

One more thing to consider about moving these big boxes.

Yes people do buy these for a little more than say the 2 - 3k going price but those guys are making payments.

Id be surprised if an actual dealer would straight buy that from you with cash at full used resale value as well. I'll even guess that the person who offered you the quick 2k is a dealer of sorts that has the space to store it.

I have a 20 year old red version of the same box only with two banks of drawers instead of three. Yesterday, my MAC tool guy offered me 4k for trade on a new one. I understand that is inflated by the profit on the new box, but he still would need to sell my old box for a profit as well. Putting his asking price somewhere around 5k selling for 4500. Food for thought. Also part of his deal is the payments and interest on the back end. The bad part of selling a large toolbox like that is most guys buying are doing so with payments and trades, very few buy outright with cash, similar to car sales.

most tool trucks will buy it whole sale from you so that they can mark it up and make a profit (not a bad thing). Unless you are going to trade it in on a new box and they give you more, being the mark up on the new box. Rich

Likely "should" sell for upper 2's or low 3's . . IF . . you have interested buyer.

I'd talk the prospective buyer (if an individual) up to price you want . . maybe $2700 or so.

Like the idea of using "GJ Train" (ie creative transport) and sell for lower price to fellow GJer . . maybe $2500 for quick sale. That would be awesome site of 3 bay Mac toolbox on the ferry crossing border to Canada !!

What is your time worth? The answer to that is everything. Do you want to post a bunch of ads, field untold numbers of calls and e-mails? If you are at the lower end of the scale, squeezing every penny might be worth it. But if your time is money and you could make more doing something else, take the offer in front of you and be done with it.
