What is general $ for asphalt install/expansion? Updated Pics

I'm looking to expand our drive way by a little bit simply to be able to maneuver cars eaiser and so I can pull the bikes in and out of the garage with out completely having to pull the cars onto the street... it's annoying..lol

The drive way is standard tight two car width. I am looking to epand it by about 4-5' on the right side and it would be a length of roughly 25'.
So roughly about 100 sq ft'... but I'm not sure if that counts what they have to build up to? I'm only counting the surface which I guess is not accuracte because it's going to be several inches think to mate up and match the excisting drive way? Again I'm only guessing...

It is on an incline so the soil and land definitely needs to be excavated. While they are doing that they are gonig to fix some low spots up by the upper garage doors, sealing the driveway as well.

What should a job like this cost? It's a two brother team and I'd like to see what this should cost (I know it's not a HUGE job, so I'm thinking the higher price quote is probably why), but before I give a price of what they quoted me for everything I'd like to see what people in the business say.

Much appreciated!

Thanks,
-Nigel

Im doing the same thing. But alittle more work because, the removal of existing driveway. And adding 600 sq feet to it. So removal, grade, base, t-base and top coat.

I got a quote from a guy that did my other driveway a couple years ago.
He was $3.50 a square foot Gave me a "good deal". He is busy.

A big company that i ran into on a job i was doing. Was running out of work after and looking for a job.
They proposed the same at $3.80 sq ft. I told him about the other price. Dropped down to $3.20

A friend of a friend that i didnt know does paving. He needs A/C installed at his home. We bartered job for job. At minimal profit.
The min was $2.00 a sq. ft.

Obviously depends on were you live. A ton of asphalt here is 80$. And theres a ton of competition around here.

Im not into the paving business. But a job like you have. Id say no more than 1,300? Just because they will be there a day. And have 300 in material.

We are getting a new driveway installed next week. All three quotes came back pretty close. Roughly $3 a sq ft.

I'm in CA, and the prices are outrageous. It seems that they hose you on small jobs, just over 400 SQ/ft cost me $2300 and that was the least expensive bid. I'm not happy about it, but couldn't get my final signed off until I did it.

Wow... seems like it's either low or HIGH..

I'm in NOVA/DC so of course the prices are going to be high.

It's a two man company, (Brothers) and they have all the proper equipment as far as rollers, and excavating. Said it would take all day to do. I was quoted 800 bucks for the entire job. All reviews I've read of them are extremely good, and my wife said they are a no ******** type of people. They came in, gave an extremely detailed solution and said this is the price. She tried to haggle but she said it was like they have more than enough work to do so that's why I think the price is higher since it is a small job...lol

Oh well, gotta do what you gotta do I guess. I figured $8 a sq ft was expensive but they have all the proper machines to dig up the yard, compact all the gravel and then roll it..etc. I don't.

Thanks for all the info!

Sounds like you may have your contractor. Good Reviews and no BS goes a LONG way with me. We had our driveway regraveled (after 20+ years of neglect), and same scenario - the people we hired have an excellent rep, took a day to do the job, compacted and tight. Weren't the cheapest, but it looks like it will last a few years before it needs to be retopped.

A bit less than two tons of asphalt. Materials is less than 25% of quote and the rest labor.

But, two guys for a day plus materials and equipment for $800 is a deal. Most decent contractors won't even show up for something that small, so expect it to be a fill in job for slower days.

My two cents anyway.

I think your minimal square footage is going to be tough to compare per Sqft prices. My drive was all the way down to $2 a sqft, but I was having 4000 sq ft done. Lets say mimimun cost for a day with labor, transport and additional costs is $700. For your job that ends up costing $7 per sqft, for my job even if it takes 3 days is only $.51 a sqft

Figured I'd update.

Work is all completed. It's raining now so that *****, but ended up changing the plans. I figured that extending 3' out wasn't enough. So we ended up going 8' out..lol Their price went up a little bit but ended up costing me $1150. They were there from 9:30am till almost 5:30pm. Clearing the grass, dirt, and then compacting the gravel and then asphalt and later sealing it all... There was no way I could have done that. My wife joked and said I'm surprised you didn't try and attempt this like you want to do everything else. After seeing how much work they did it's shown me that when we get the rear patio done I'm not doing it at all... lol

Only thing I'm not too keen on is the fact that you can see the seam, but they did cut the old driveway and put tar or something so it would bond correctly with the new stuff. Overall I think that would fade as we drive on it and or continue to seal it each year from them.

I'm happy now that the drive way is bigger and that I don't have to shuffle the cars around to be able to pull the car in the garage right to the maxjax and not play car taxi trying to move things around. Overall a very good experience which is rare to me anymore, they were extremely nice, professional and did a great job I think.

Now you have enough for a real vehicle parking spot on that side. I am not any real asphalt knowledge, but not sure that anyone would be able to do that and not have the joint showing, short of complete tearout and one-piece new asphalt.

Nigel -

Awesome update. Runs me at least $2500 for 5 hr day, 2 man crew for any trade out here on average

Where is "out here"?
Would you please consider filling in your location see we can see where you are out there.

Security concerns are fully understood, but even something vauge (like just the state) would help everyone understand a post like this much better.

Thanks!

Old thread but I just had the drive way extended again... lol.

Same guys who did the first extension. Super nice. NO BS. I'm sure I actually paid a little higher than what I should have but honestly I'm ok with that. So this time around we extended it about an extra 4' width to the already extension and then I had them go on the side of the house.

I am going to add top soil so that way the sides don't look like a drop off and I'll slope the back so it's not so high looking. The just sealed the entire thing so that's why it looks splotchy in areas. If they come back next week when they do my neighbors I might ask them to touch up the new section. It looks slightly different in texture of absorbtion if that makes sense. I think they might have to do another layer of seal on it to make it blend better?

I had them slope the driveway down because if it was initially going to be level with the driveway it would have been 2' off the ground which would have been WAY too high. The way it sits now if you are walking down the side walk or street you'd never know the drive way goes down the side of the house.

I think I added another 18' in length all the way down the side of the house. So now I have enough room to park an extra car and or width to work on the cars in the driveway when I'm washing or cleaning them.

Think it's probably around 200 sq ft of extra driveway.

I just paid $2 per sq. ft. (8300 sq ft) for 3" laid on top an existing gravel base. Last year I paid $7.50 per sq. ft. for a small parking pad where they had to strip top soil and bring in gravel.

I'm getting my old driveway expanded from one car wide to two cars wide and paving across the "No Man's Land" gravel area between my lawn and the street. They are going to remove up to 2", do all necessary excavation, grading and installation of 1550 SqFt of QP, 3" of FABC poured and compacted with a vibrating roller for ~$3.75/Sq Ft. The same contractor is doing two of my neighbors driveways, one of which is Pete, the contractor that did my master suite. I don't know the paving contractor personally, but if he's good enough for Pete, he's fine with me. Pete is VERY particular...

I had my driveway quoted a few years ago. I must have called the wrong people. For 450 square feet, they quoted $2500. I just had it done in concrete for $2600. I prefer concrete, so I thought the asphalt quote was nuts, especially in my area.

I was quoted $7200 for 2120sq ft (106’ x 20’). That’s $3.40/sq ft

So I think because my extension wasn't huge it was probably a higher $ to sq ft. I think I paid roughly $12 per sq foot. Prior to contacting the guys again I went and got a couple people and they all said their minimum to come out was $2500. My pad wasn't huge... or at least the initial sketch I sent to people.

I'll have to go out and measure how big they did the extension.
Edit: I was wrong. I got roughly 254' sq ft of extension.
Which brings it to around $9.48 per sq ft instead of the inital $12 I thought it was.
(if you don't count the below work as well)

And the also filled all cracks in the exsisting driveway and also sealed everything, not to mention clearing the grass/roots/rocks, then laying down the gravel and slight grading. I paid $2400.
I think he said they used 4-5 tons of gravel, and around 6-7 tons of asphalt. I think more actually, I should have written it down. Because it's around 4" thick on just the asphalt not counting the 3" miniumum in places for the compacted gravel.

He clearly said the driveway isn't going anyhwere..lol When they had to cut the edge of their first extension to make a clean line as they picked up the pieces they commented on how thick it was..lol.

My initial request was simply a 10'x15' extension. But of course just like last time I went larger. Now looking at it I think I could have added another 3' at the end of the driveway on the side of the house. But then we are getting into a never ending "more more" situation. This is much better than what I initially had when we bought the house and even better after the first extension.

Is it actually a playground, with climbing structures, swingsets, etc? Or is it a play court for ball sports? 9" of certified playground mulch has been the minimum requirement for a playground surface since before I got my CPSA over a decade ago.

Tommy

It's a multi use playground, where the climbing structures go it gets a rubber safety surface. I don't think NYC uses mulch, they seem to like the safety surface.

I just got a quote for 2.72 s/f but that included fill and grading too as mine's an old ratty gravel arrangement.

First time parking in the spot. I thought to backup camera would help so I could see the edge but because it drops off it doesn't help much. I'm going to buy one of those rubber parking bumpers and probably drill and attach it into the back of the asphalt driveway just in case.

It will also be less intimidating once I add a couple yards of soil and grade off the back of the driveway so that way it's not drop off it will just be earth.

It also looking at the back I should have gone back another two or three feet, in one of the pictures you can see I probably should have gone to where the one vertical line is on the brick as the back end of the extension, as it sits now like I'm kind of in between the middle. But it's always going to be something what my wife said you'll always keep wanting more and more. At first I didn't think I'd be able to park a car in front of this car but then you can see the one picture of where the first extension was I still have an extra 3 ft behind that and I was able to park a car on the first extension with nothing behind it so I have more room both in the back and the side.

It works, I like it, I wish it was longer, but that's okay ROFl!
