What is it and what is it for?

Just came across what appears to be an unmarked 5 inch side cutter with 4 sets of teeth. Does anyone have any idea what this is for? Who made it? Google and Ebay photo search turn up nothing. I always love a mystery tool. Can you help? Many thanks!

I ran across a pair of cutters with similar jaw serrations some time ago. Research showed that they retained an elastic material that was intended to retain the cut wire. The softer material wore out and departed, probably quite quickly, which would explain why we don't see similar offerings today.

I wondered if they were an unknown sort of wire stripper. thank you!

I suppose the different sized grooves were for various gauges of wire

I have a pair here (somewhere) with red rubber inserts. I went looking for them to see if they were branded, but haven't found them yet. I will share photos if I do.

Thank you, so much! Those are definitely “throat-hold” pliers, missing the plastic insert.

Here's a few I found recently. Can still read "CAM-RON" on top and US on bottom of pivot area

Probably. These are still intact, but pretty brittle. Im assuming they would just crack and fall out if I tried to use them with wire though.

Based on his pics, could you just tape off a jaw, and fill it with clear silicone caulk with some orange dye?
I would clean them up (remove anything that would hurt adhesion), warm up the metal a little (again to help with adhesion), clamp them closed and fill in with hot melt glue. Then split with a razor. Alternatively, pinch them around a piece of baking parchment before filling.
