What is it ? Approx. When was it made ?

I picked this and some other goodies at an Auction a few days ago ... I dont know what it is for certain, but I have a couple of ideas for it. . It is a Brown & Sharpe. There is no Model or Serial Num. on it. It as a sticker saying " Patent Apllied for ". It does turn on and the spindle does spin. It has a " 2 prong Plug ( original )" on it.

There is a piece missing out of the Tailstock as the spindle has grooves on it like it moves ( forward / backwards ) from twisting a knob thats missing. And the Tailstock is adjustable.

It will lock into each one of the 24 slots.

Its obvious enough that its a spacing head of some sort, and some sort of 'special', but I've no idea as to what sort of job it was built for.

Do I guess correctly that the spindle has a collet under that hex?

Could you post another photo with the sheet metal cover removed, so that we can see what it has for 'spindle bearings'?

It looks like a cylindrical grinding attachment for a surface grinder to me. Harig and Do-All also made similar looking devices.

Kinda looks like a Barnes Lathe, maybe turn of the century

No luck on identifying it better but appears to be pre-1964 when the factory was moved to North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Yes there is a Collet in the Spindle. Yes I will take the cover off of it today and get another picture.

Here is a pic of the bottom side. Which does tilt, but you have to remove the fastners at one end or the other and use the remaining 2 as the pivot.

Judging by the indexing ring on the headstock, I'd guess something like a commutator lathe.

Some sort of special puropose indexable lathe I'd say. I like the commutator lathe idea.
