Hey guys. I had a friend call me today and say that someone had dropped this off for him, but he didn't want it, and he gave it to me. The problem is, I don't really know what it is. I'm guessing that it's some sort of cabinet that is used when tig welding material that puts off toxic fumes. It is air tight with seals and a vacuum hose port. It's all stainless construction, with Plexiglas sides. The foot print is 48" wide by 26" deep.
I'm thinking of using it as a small parts paint booth, but if it's a $800-$1,500 cabinet, I don't want to destroy it, I'll just sell it and buy a small paint booth.
Give me your thoughts on this.
thanks

It is a purge cabinet. When welding things like titanium you need to shield the back of the weld area with argon.

Steve

2X Fill the the box up w/ argon to shield the back sides that don't see Argon from the cup. Probably worth a buck ot two.

purging chamber. when welding odd shaped stainless or some exotic metal (noramlly needs X-ray/ultra sound inspection), you would have to purge the back side to elimaiate the comtamination. noramlly nitrogen. weld bead is still being protected and cooled by argon from the torch.

When welding some exhaust manifolds and things don't you flow argon/similar through the inside of the tubing for the same reason?

that's true if you are welding a tube or manifold which you can plug up the ends. but what if you are just welding to pieces plates together, or anything not a tube? or, you need to weld from in side the tube.

:drool:That thing is bad ***!

It is a purge vessel for high purity welding applications. I would put it up on a welding forum for sale for a little over the cost of a small paint booth and see what happens. If someone buys it well then you have helped each other, If not use it as a paint booth.
