Anybody know what this is for? Yard sale find I've had for a long time and really not found a valid use for!

At first I thought it might be a nut cracker, since those are sometimes made like a press, but you could probably put a small coconut in that.

It might be a cider press (possibly incomplete, a cider press should have some sort of vessel to contain liquid, or some means of moving liquid into a bigger vat)

It might be a dental press:

The handle suggests to me that it's not designed for constant use. I'm curious to see what others think.

It could definitely be an older style dental press, but vote is: Medieval torture device to be applied to men guilty of violating chastity belts...

i know it isnt, but my 1st thought was an early press for bearings into skateboard wheels.
i'm curious also.
is there any stamping #s on it?

Too small for a caliper press. Looked more carefully, no stampings or numbers. But, has a label on it! Hadn't seen it before, it's on the inside:

It's very stout. Welch Scientific makes classroom physics and chemistry equipment. I'm sure it's a press of some kind. A search of their website for "press" and for "clamp" didn't turn up a match. Does this info help job anybody's memory?

Thanks,
dave

The 1932 Welch catalog has a vaguely similar item, part of an apparatus for measuring permeability of iron. It clamps a sample to an iron bar.
