Got this at the flea yesterday for $1. It's solid brass or copper (can't tell the difference and being color blind doesn't help). Anyone know what it is? A garden sign holder? Candle snuffer?

Has the style of a fireplace tool, but I've never seen one with a flat disc on the end like that.

The shape of the working end makes it completely useless as either a fireplace tool or a candle snuffer.
I'm going with cooking utensil of some sort.

Its for spanking the wife when she misbehaves.
It's old, they used to allow that sort of thing to go on

Make me think of a bedspread warmer from the 18th century. But those usually did hold coals, this one appears flat like a paddle?
