What is it?

Looks like an ink pen with the slivers of magnetic metal being stored in the barrel. Pull the “cap” off and it reveals one of the slivers held in by a colett of sorts. The metal slivers appear to be consumable.

Do those slivers have any markings on them, and/or are they of varying thickness? I have a vague memory of my grandfather showing me something similar. It was used to gauge the gap in something, not spark plugs obviously.

This is it. We used them years ago to burnish the contacts on timing assemblies for boiler/burner flame safeguard controls.
