Machinist's tool of some sort, but I can't figure out what it is used for.
Both ends unscrew about 3/8" then come off.

Could be part(s) of a machinists' jack (leveling/support screw for work). Some consist of a base, mid section, and a top (that contacts the work). Those could be stacked mid sections (with knurling to permit easier turnage).

Are the 'caps' threaded through?

The caps have the screw thread attached. The middle piece has a threaded hole in each end. The ends of the middle piece are indented about 1/8".

Close, but different. There is no screw sticking out of the center piece, just the end pieces.

Sorry, your pic did not show us that detail, you are stuck with our answer. ;)

I was trying to decipher that, since all three obviously could not attach as shown, without an exposed male thread on one end. Otherwise, the knurling etc is a good match. Wonder if the center is an oddball, different brand, where the threading was different, than the ends More later.

It could just be missing a stud. They're removable.

No holes in the end caps.

Looking at the Starrett images, I don’t think you can double stack the short and long extensions. Not on B & S

looks like Lufkin can, but the knurling is wrong.

just more ideas

That looks very close to what I have, but still, when it's put together, there are no holes or screws on the outside.

It could be parts from more than one. Looks to me like it's used as a spreader somehow. Like maybe to put between parallels to keep them from getting knocked over. Something like that.

Anyone know what the other object in the picture is called or used for?
The teeter totter? I would guess its for converting a regular vise into a swiveling jaw vise. What the real answer is depends on how strong / how well built it is.
