I am not sure if this is even a tool but I figured I would see if you guys knew what it is. I got it today at the flea market. It was at the bottom of a bucket full of tools that I bought and I have no idea what it is. It has 5 teeth like arms that expand out when you open up the handle and they converge when you close them. It also has some sort of metal flat that goes around them and a pin that locks it in place when the handles are closed. Doing a google search with the pat no. and the company name got no answers. My old man seems to think it has something to do with mason jars but I really have no idea at all.

Patent 2601547 is for a elastic band expander, the drawing for which, looks very much like your tool. Reading further (page 3), it seems that the tool was designed with a purpose in mind: to place a rubber band around the tail or "other organ" of an animal to bring about emasculation. :shocking:

Show that tool to the next fella who's going for "the snip". :lol_hitti

it's for castrating bull calves. the elastic band is placed over the pin tips, expanded and then the testicles are slid through the tool and the band is popped off. all blood flow is cut off and in a few weeks the scrotum falls off and the skin has healed. my father raises cattle and had a tool similar to it.

Wow that is probably the last thing that I would have thought that it was used for. I feel kind of weird now seeing how I have been playing around with this thing all afternoon and passing it along to family members to see what they thought it was...

LOL! You should give it as a white elephant gift some Christmas.

yep saw one of those at the flea market today myself, it only took a couple of seconds for me to figure it out, but I live in ranchin country. From what I understand most of the guys/gals around here just bite 'em off the young lambs after they're born.

Those things are great if you have a young daughter starting to date. Place them on a table near the front door and explain there use to every young man that comes a calling.
